They worked all day on my yard, eliminating and removing 2 large oak trees, an extremely tall hickory tree, 9 pine trees, and a "widow-maker" deciduous tree in 100 degree heat. My kids and I tried to bring them food, drinks, chairs, etc... , but we had to be EXTREMELY forceful for them to accept our offering. It typically takes three to five days to stain a fence, though most of that time is spent—literally—watching paint dry. The main issue is that you can’t stain a wet fence because the stain won’t sink into the porous grain of the wood. That means you’ll need to wait 24 hours to stain your fence after you wash it and 12 to 24 hours between each coat. Most people spend about an hour staining per 10 to 20 linear feet. 

Pressure-treated wood lasts at least 10 years, but with the right care and treatment, it can last as long as 40 years. Painting the boards is one way to increase the lifespan of pressure-treated wood. The layer of paint provides extra protection for the wood against the exterior elements and insects.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

Late spring or early summer is usually the best time to stain a fence. Pick your timing carefully and aim to start your DIY when you see a forecast that shows no rain and low humidity levels for at least a few days. If it’s too hot (like in the middle of summer), the stain will dry out too quickly. If it’s too cold (like in the winter and early spring), the stain might not be able to fully dry.

When applying multiple coats, wait four to six hours for each coat to dry. Not waiting long enough can result in streaks, peeling, and uneven color. Plus, it will be more difficult to discern where the second coat has already been applied.
