We've been planning on having windows in the guest cottage replaced for several years. We'd researched various firms and decided to at least get an estimate from Rick because he has a local business and the word of mouth around town is very good. We scheduled an appointment with Rick. He came out and spent quite a bit of time asking us questions about what we wanted and explaining a couple of different possible options. Then he looked at the windows we wanted to replace, taking careful measurements of them all, entering the results into the file he created for our job on his iPad. The cottage was built about 70 years ago. We appreciated that Rick noticed the soundness of the trim work ("you don't find wood like that any more"). He assured us his crew would be especially careful not to disturb the trim during the replacement. We scheduled a follow up appointment for the next week. Rick came back with several possible options at various price points. For example, double-hung windows are about 1/2 the price of casement. We wanted casement window on the wind-ward side of the cottage so we could keep them open a little during a rain storm. We went with double-hung elsewhere. Some of the windows are fairly close to the floor. Rick suggested using tempered glass as a safety measure in case there might ever be a child banging against them some day. It was something we hadn't thought of and were glad he brought up. The extra cost per window wasn't that much and well worth the peace of mind. On this visit Rick also had a cut-away of the vinyl claded window he recommended for our installation, explaining why he thought this was the best quality window for us and relating problems he'd seen with other brands. After he left, we thought it over for a few days, then called him to tell him what options we had decided on. A couple of days later he was back with a contract. I was impressed that even though he had taken careful measurements already, he remeasured to be sure he had it right. I only gave a B for punctuality. That's not quite fair. Rick was always right on time for his appointments and called to let us know he was on the way. The B is because it was a bit over a month before we could get the work done, and that was mainly because of time to get the custom sized windows made. I have to call the installation itself perfect, both inside and out. There's no damage to interior surfaces at all and Rick kept his promise about not disturbing the exterior trim. One other point to make is that Rick kept to the agreed upon price even though the crew ran into a snag that took more time. Some of the windows they were replacing were antique cast iron. They were lovely, but single pane and completely energy inefficient and didn't open properly so we were having them replaced. Getting them out without damaging them was a chore. It added a considerable amount to the time his team was here, yet he didn't try to adjust his fee at all. In short, we are extremely pleased. Rick and his crew did a great job for us at a very reasonable price. We recommend him highly and will definitely use him again when we replace some of the window in our main home.

We planned a vacation while the floors were being done. When we returned home, we were not happy with the color of the floors. They were way too light for our taste. We immediately called Ron late afternoon on a Saturday with our concerns and he showed up about an hour after our call. He immediately got to work re-sanding the floors, working very late into the night. He returned on Sunday to continue with the poly and finished the job on Monday. I could not be happier with the quality of the sanding and the final color of our floors. They look better than they did when we installed them over 20 years ago. Pine floors are very hard to sand due to the softness of the wood. Ron took the time to reset all of the antique square cut nails after each pass with the sander and it shows in the finished job. Obviously a miscommunication regarding the final color and it cost us a few days, but the end result was well worth it. Virtually dustless too! I would use them again in a heartbeat. By the time they finished we were more than ready to see them go. The owner (senior) was talkative and the project seemed to be dragging along. Right after they left we noticed that an antique plow and well pump (outside) were broken and an original farm bin from inside was missing. We were not happy. But, to be fair, we recently had another company [which we completely trust] out to look at other repairs and asked them to check the foundation and they were very impressed with what Whitney had done for the foundation. They reported that everything was solid and there was no evidence of shifting. The only thing they could improve upon would be to add steel angle brackets to the pylons for a little extra insurance."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/ny/baldwinsville/d-r-whitney-jr-contracting-reviews-6601066.htm"},"position":6},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"JFJ Builders, Inc","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"NY","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Jill C."},"reviewBody":"JFJ Builders, Inc owner, Joe Johnson, responded to my call in a timely manner. His estimate was detailed and timely. He answered all phone calls I made promptly and courteously. During the construction, he kept me appraised of any changes that needed to be made as construction progressed and allowed me to have input on these decisions. His employees were all polite and friendly. My windows were open during this summer renovation and I never heard any foul language or offcolor jokes, though they did seem to enjoy friendly banter. The grounds were kept neat during construction and cleanup was always accomplished at the end of each workday. The end product was amazing and came well within my budget even though I added some items during construction. The work far exceeded my expectations as far as quality and timing. Mr. Johnson appears to use multiple vendors for his supplies, increasing quality and value priced materials. "It went great! We found Fisher Precious Metals on Angie's List, and after googling them, we found they had very positive reviews across the web. Although it was a 45 minute drive from our home, we felt it might be worth it, and it was. We made an appointment with John via email, arrived at 11:00, and spent just over an hour in his office. He evaluated the sterling silver set we had to sell and gave us what we felt was a very fair price. He'd given us an estimate on the value of the gold coins via email, and although the price of gold had fluctuated since he'd provided the quote, the final price was very, very close to the initial quote. We were happy to learn that they will also buy jewelry, as I have a few pieces I haven't worn in a very long time. We were very pleased with the entire experience and will definitely return to their company when we have gold or silver to sell, and we're happy to recommend them to our friends. One thing to keep in mind is that sterling silver sets are basically worth the price of the silver itself. We knew that going in, so we were not disappointed and, in fact, the price we received was a little higher than we'd expected."
