"I had an excellent experience with this company. Joe was terrific! I am the owner of a large property and Joe along with his team completely cleared it of all the junk that had been left behind by a tenant. It really was a disaster and I am so grateful that they were able to cart everything away in one day. They took it all from large appliances to a workout unit. I believe they filled up four truckloads. I highly recommend them!"

"Because I can only choose one category, I went with 'Post Construction Clean Up. But what George and his wife's team did was totally different`; they helped up get our house prepped for sale. An incredible deep cleaning inside, extraordinary pressure washing outside, great help in carting out the endless amount of unwanted furniture (and far more) that needed to go....He understood what we needed to do far better that we did. Bottom line: They do great work, at very fair prices."

"We use Nick and his team to clean out a house for sale. They came multiple times and cleaned out everything from dishes to beds and dressers. They were so helpful and personable. Accommodating whatever we needed to be removed. They also cleaned out a free standing garage and helped us remove and old car. They worked fast and did an amazing job."

Customers say: Quick response

"Highly recommend Hudson Valley Landscaping & Drainage for the foundation sealing and drainage work done. Marc explained every detail and answered our endless questions. The work was completed faster than originally estimated and no excess damage to the lawn and surrounding landscaping. They even removed and replaced one mature foundation plant, and seeded the disturbed lawn. The whole job was documented with pictures too (ask Marc to see them). You will not be disappointed and we’re so happy to have a dry family room."

Garbage Collection questions, answered by experts

In some cases, it’s more cost-effective in the long run to replace a garbage disposal, but it depends on the specific issue you’re having and the age of your disposal. You should ask a garbage disposal repair tech for a quote to repair your appliance and then see if it would be more worthwhile to replace it. Additionally, garbage disposals last for around 15 years, so if you know your appliance is reaching that age, it’s likely better to pay for a new garbage disposal rather than sink money into repairs.

The main issue with garbage disposals is clogging. This can mean a clogging of the pipes that expel the food along with water, or a clogging of the mechanical parts themselves. The problem lies in the solution because you can’t easily see clogs if they’re inside the system, and reaching in to dislodge stuck items is a risky proposal. Call a pro and ask what they would do, but if you can’t see the clog easily, and running the unit won’t free it, you need to let a professional handle the fix.

There are many maintenance and repair issues that lead to a malfunctioning garbage disposal. Regular clogs place wear and tear on the motors, leading to an eventual shutdown. Electrical issues at the breaker, wall outlet, or disposal itself can fry the unit. The most common cause is simply a worn-down motor. These motors can only handle so much use before powering down for good.

The most common garbage disposal size in the U.S. is 1/2 horsepower. This size is ideal for households with three or fewer people or those that don't produce much food waste. Although 1/2 horsepower can't handle the typical food waste load for a household of four (which is about 250 pounds of food waste annually) as effectively as 3/4 horsepower, it remains the most common size of garbage disposal on the market.

These appliances do unscrew, but you need to disconnect everything properly when you replace your garbage disposal. Make sure you shut the power off to the area first and check that it’s off with a voltage detector. Disconnect the main drain line and P-trap, and then disconnect the dishwasher drain line if you have one connected. You can then unscrew your garbage disposal using a disposal wrench. Just make sure you disconnect the electrical lines before removing your appliance.
