Insulation questions, answered by experts

These two types of foams are similar chemically, but they are applied in a much different way and each has its own pros and cons. Spray foam can only be used if the area where you will be installing the installation is wide open and easy to access. Injection foam should be used where it's cost-prohibitive to remove the walls that are placed over the insulation. Spray foam is a much less expensive process and requires less expertise.

Even though spray foam insulation typically comes at a higher price point than other insulation types, the benefits make up for the investment. Some benefits of spray foam insulation include:

  • Improved air quality, as this type of insulation helps minimize indoor allergens

  • Easy installation

  • Lifespan of 80 to 100 years.

  • Added home strength, protecting it from humidity and wind.

  • Additional soundproofing

  • Energy bill savings

The easiest way to cover your HVAC ducts during construction is to use painter’s tape to affix plastic sheets over your vents and air returns in the area of your home where construction will take place. Keep in mind that closing off a portion of your system can put strain on your blower motor and air handler, so either shut the zone off or shut your system off while construction is underway. If you shut the zone, you can also hang plastic sheets over doorways to separate the construction area and keep dust contained.

If you’re moving wires, installing new wires, or installing new fixtures in the space you’re insulating, then you will need to hire a licensed electrician to do that portion of the job for you. However, if you just intend on replacing old insulation or adding new insulation over existing insulation, then you don’t need to hire one. Your insulation installer will work around wiring, fixtures, outlets, and switches, even if they’re installing fiberglass batts in the voids where wires run. However, you will need an electrician if you suspect a problem with your wiring during the insulation work.

If you have a number of large icicles on your roof, you may have an issue with insulation. This is particularly true if you’re also dealing with ice dams. A roofing contractor can diagnose potential insultation issues and help you come up with a game plan to solve them.
