These oils provide a water-resistant, velvety matte finish but require regular reapplication. If the countertops are primarily for appearance or serving, a stain can add color and sheen. Polyurethane is another option, but it tends to show scratches more prominently, making it less ideal if you plan to cut directly on the surface.

Solid surface countertops are fairly resilient. You can use soapy water or ammonia-based cleaners. You can also occasionally use diluted bleach (around 5 tablespoons per gallon of water) for sanitization. Avoid window cleaners because they leave a waxy film that can dull the countertop’s surface. Solid surface material is nonporous, so there’s no need for sealing.

If you have light renovation experience, you should be able to build your own countertop made from wood or laminate. These tend to be the most DIY-friendly materials, but you’ll need to be comfortable using a circular saw and taking precise measurements. When it comes to installation, leave anything that involves plumbing, electricity, or gas lines to the pros.

Unfortunately, you cannot put hot pans directly on laminate countertops, as the heat can cause significant damage. The heat can cause chips, burns, and marks, plus weaken the laminate. If you do have something hot you need to set down, then be sure you use a trivet or towel as a barrier between the countertop and pan so you can prolong its life.
