"Replaced retaining wall with new regraded slope and beautiful new lawn. Originally called to replace wall with new stone wall, and Glenn additionally offered alternative ideas. Thankfully we went with his vision because we now have a more spectacular and cleaner more open front yard. Glenn enjoys what he does, takes pride in his work, and it all shows. His men showed up on time and worked hard from beginning to end. If you're looking for someone with a designer acumen who takes pride in his work, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hilltop Masonry & Landscaping."

"We've had a wonderful experience working with them on various projects these last two years. We called Glenn to give us an estimate for a retaining wall replacement. He provided a quote for the job, but Glenn also offered advice for alternative options. We went with his vision to tear the wall down and simply regrade the slope and install a new lawn in it's place (where various brush/shrubs and pachysandra previously thrived). The difference is like night and day and we couldn't be happier, thanks to Glenn's vision. Not only was his recommendation a far better option, but he also saved us some money by taking his advice. Glenn and his men are easy to work with, and they take pride in their work. They don't leave until the job is done. We had the same experience last year when they built a beautiful foundation garden in front of the house. Once again, Glenn had the know-how and expertise to design and plan and offer his recommendations. He's professional and as honest as they come. We look forward to working with him again next year when we redo our driveway!"

Lawn Irrigation questions, answered by experts

Depending on the species, most fescue grasses thrive in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8, though some varieties can thrive as far as zone 10. While it’s a cool-season grass, it has the unique ability to adapt and thrive in many different types of climates. For this reason, you'll mostly find fescue grasses throughout the transitional temperature zones of the country.

Power seeding and aeration are both excellent ways to improve lawn health, but they serve different functions. Aeration focuses on improving soil health by creating channels that allow more water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide to reach the roots. In contrast, power seeding is a method of planting grass seeds, often by creating narrow trenches in the soil. One service isn't better than the other; they are complementary. It is beneficial to aerate your lawn before power seeding, as this makes the seeding more effective by helping the germinating seeds access the resources they need. It's a good practice to aerate your lawn once or twice a year, regardless of whether you plan to power seed.

The best hardiness zones for St. Augustine grass are USDA growing zones 8, 9, and 10. However, with a bit of extra attention, it'll also grow well in zones 7, 11, and 12.

You may need to lay sod on the areas you dug up once you get the okay from the contractor. It will take about 30 to 45 days for the sod to take root. Consult a local sod installer to get an accurate estimate of the timeline of your specific yard-enhancement project.

Those who live in between zones may have summers too warm for many cool-season grasses and winters too cold for warm-season grasses. Grasses selected for these climates must be well adapted to both conditions, so opt for tall fescue if your area is more prone to very cold temperatures or kikuyu grass if your home has notably hot summers.
