Mold doesn’t take long to form, especially in dark, isolated areas like under the floorboards, where you’re less likely to know it’s wet in the first place. Mold can take root and proliferate in just 24 to 48 hours, but it can be up to a week before you start to notice funky smells. 

Homes built before the 1990s may contain asbestos, but the only way to be sure is to have your home tested. Hire an asbestos testing and removal service to determine whether you have the hazardous material in your home and the best process for removing or sealing it.

Some mold can look like dust, but most doesn’t. Powdery mildew is often confused with dust as it’s a similar color and grows in a similar way. Some gray molds can look like dust as well, but usually, it’s pretty easy to spot the difference. It’s better to be safe, so if you aren’t completely sure what you’re seeing is dust, call a mold professional to check it out.

Mold grows quickly. It typically begins to grow on drywall about 24 hours after exposure to moisture or humidity. Drywall is a porous material, which makes it particularly hospitable to mold growth. 

While mold growth begins after just a day or so, it can take a few weeks before the evidence becomes visible. Mold spores will typically appear on the drywall surface within three weeks of growth starting.

Determining if vermiculite contains asbestos requires professional testing. Visual inspection alone cannot confirm the presence of asbestos fibers, as these fibers are so small that they are not visible to the naked eye. A certified asbestos inspector will collect samples of the vermiculite insulation and send them to a laboratory for analysis. Microscopic examination using polarized light microscopy (PLM) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is necessary to accurately identify asbestos fibers. DIY sampling is strongly discouraged due to the potential health risks associated with asbestos exposure.
