"I think they need to plan better for their workmen to get to site. It might be a one off but we had a van come from Bethpage out to Yonkers, when there is more than one office in the NY area...Friendly and professional and thorough. We ended up paying more than we thought but the chimney hadn't been looked at in quite a while by the previous owners, and there was obvious physical deterioration. They sorted everything including exterior brickwork and left the place tidy. I was pleased with the result."

Aside from learning that it can operate properly, homebuyers will want to know that the structures themselves are sound and won’t affect the integrity of the surrounding home. With full knowledge, homebuyers can then make plans for any necessary repairs before they move in.

The short answer is yes, as hearths need to extend a certain distance out from the fire. This is usually around at least a foot in front but is often more, closer to two feet even. There is another distance to consider, which is the distance beyond the opening of the fireplace. Each municipality will have different code requirements.

Wood fireplace inserts produce more heat without replacing the whole system. A fireplace installer can verify that you have a connector and chimney system to fit the wood-burning insert.

Gas fireplace inserts require less maintenance and are an efficient way to produce warmth. Some can also produce heat in the event of a power outage.

Electric fireplace inserts don't have a real open flame, so they produce flames that mimic a real fire surrounded by artificial logs with LED light. Many electric fireplace inserts produce heat from glowing elements while only using electricity.

Sap, despite its stickiness, is primarily made of water and is responsible for wood being “green” when it’s first cut. Green wood doesn’t burn very easily and will snap and crackle a lot, not ideal for a fire pit or fireplace. That’s why it’s best to let fresh, sap-filled wood season or dry out for at least a season before you start burning.

A hot fire alone will not remove significant creosote buildup and can be dangerous, as it risks causing a chimney fire. While the warmth from a fire can help loosen stuck tar, making treatments like creosote logs more effective, it is not a substitute for proper cleaning. For existing creosote, the safest and most effective method is to have your chimney professionally cleaned by a chimney sweep.
