"Nine years ago, Cricket on the Hearth installed my gas fireplace (FP). Now that we are ready to sell our house, a home inspection revealed that my FP does not conform to code. That's because Cricket did not install an emergency gas shut-off valve within 3 ft. of the FP, per code. (Note: This requirement existed when the FP was first installed.) I recently called Cricket and asked why this requirement wasn't met. The person I spoke with, who I believe was the owner, did not know the answer to my question. My goal wasn't to argue why the valve was not installed upfront. Rather, it was to get one installed ASAP, so the code-lacking FP would not impede the sale of my home. Consequently, I asked the gentleman what it would cost to remedy this situation. He gave me a reasonable price to install a valve... $150. But he added that, given the COVID-19 situation, the work could not be done right away. I understood, of course, and asked for a ROUGH idea on the timing. "No idea," was his reply. "And I have lots of customers ahead of you." For me, time was of the essence since my home was on the market and a deficient FP could hinder its sale. I explained this to the gentleman to no avail. Now, I'm a reasonable person. And, given the virus situation, I understood why the work could not be done immediately. But to brush me off as he did was unacceptable. After all, shouldn't Cricket have installed the shut-off valve in the first place? Was it right of them to leave my home vulnerable with a FP that lacked an emergency shut-off valve? To make amends, shouldn't they have offered to correct the situation as soon as permissible (given the COVID-19 situation)? The answers to these questions are obvious. Long story short, I found a qualified resource to install the valve, and he did so right away. It cost me $250, but it was money well spent to remove a major potential obstacle to selling my home. Because of Cricket on the Hearth's lack of customer care in this situation, I would never recommend them to anyone."

They will say over and over how they will make it right. When in reality they will do absolutely nothing to fix the problem. It has been nothing but a nightmare trying to work with Isaacs. I could not regret hiring them more. It's been 6 months of pure torture."

Even if you invested in the cost of a gas shut-off valve for your oven and other appliances, it’s a good idea to add a seismic shut-off valve as an extra safety measure. 

Gas shut-off valves for appliances are manual, meaning someone has to cut off the flow of gas. This leaves room for error, as you might not be home or might be too distracted to think about gas lines during an earthquake. An earthquake valve is automatic and will protect your home from gas-related disasters in the event of an earthquake.

Although a gas company supplies gas to homes, connecting gas appliances, like a dryer, is not their responsibility. The primary role of a gas company is to safely deliver gas to a property and maintain the gas supply lines up to a specific point, typically the gas meter or shut off valve. The task of installation is usually taken on by the homeowner or professional dryer installer. 

In most cases, a gas stove should be installed by a licensed plumber. Connecting gas appliances carries many risks, chief among them a fatal gas leak. If your home is already set up with the proper gas hookups, you may be able to DIY the installation (or save money by hiring a local handyperson or basic appliance installer near you rather than a plumber). If you’re ever in doubt, however, we recommend going with a professional master plumber.

A few potential problems can cause your gas grill to stop working:

  • Burners aren’t properly aligned.

  • Food debris is clogging the burners.

  • Hose connections may be blocked.

  • Burners may not be getting enough gas.

  • Gas valve is not working properly. 

If you’re experiencing any of those problems with your gas grill, hire a local grill repair professional to inspect your grill for issues and implement a plan to resolve them.

Installing a gas line is no simple task. From start to finish, you’re looking at anywhere from six to 12 weeks to acquire the correct permits, dig a trench, and connect your appliances. Naturally, the longer the gas line, the longer it will take to complete. If your plumber needs to hire additional contractors to dig trenches and navigate around or remove obstacles, this could put you at the longer end of the timeframe. 

Once the land is prepped and licenses acquired, installing the actual line may only take a few days to a few weeks, weather permitting.
