"As a staircase runner, the job was fairly straightforward. Only disconnect was between their (automated) morning-of-install phone call - which promised AM installation and actual arrival at 3 PM. Issues with edge binding machine slowed progress but they got it done and it looks great."

"There was a problem with the floors feeling rough after they were finished, because the floors were so old and never had any finish put on them, but I just called Rick and he came back and made my floors look beautiful. He also said that if there were still any rough spots when it dried to just call him and he would come back again. He was very professional and the floors look great. His motto is that he wants to give all his customers "The CUTTING EDGE difference". I would highly recommend him, in fact when we are ready to refinish the other 2 rooms in our house, we will be calling him."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

No, you don’t technically need a cement backer board for a wall tiling project, but not using it risks disastrous moisture damage. Cement is naturally water-resistant, whereas drywall soaks it in, which can lead to warping or mold growth. Always use a backer board treated with a waterproof membrane for bathrooms and other chronically damp areas to ensure complete tile shower waterproofing.

Tile costs vary by material; for example, ceramic tends to be more affordable than stone. These influence installation timelines and skill requirements.

On average, tiling a shower costs between $1,800 and $5,000, with most people paying around $2,700. The price of this project depends on multiple factors, including the kind of tile you choose, the size of your shower, and labor rates in your area. If you decide to tile your own shower (instead of hiring a professional), it’ll likely cost $800 to $1,400.

The process takes two to four days, depending on the size of the area and your experience level. The first day involves assessing and prepping the existing tile, while the second day is for laying the new tile. This may take longer in complex areas. After letting the adhesive dry for 24 hours, grouting and sealing can be completed on day three. For larger projects or intricate tile patterns, expect the timeline to stretch a bit longer. Also, proper drying time between steps is essential for long-lasting results, which extends the project’s time.

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire.
