"Brian quickly contacted us after I called HomeAdvisors for help. That same day he came over to analyze the situation. He said he thought we had a raccoon in our attic and proceeded to find a way to get him out. He set a trap, and the next morning we had a raccoon in the trap. I can't tell you how grateful we were to know that she was caught and we wouldn't have to contend with all the noise she made each evening let alone the damage. Brian was very personable and professional and he explained each method he was using. He came out to the house four days in a row to make sure all was going well and he finalized the job by repairing and covering the hole on our roof. I would recommend him in a minute. Can't say thankful enough. JoAnn Lewandowski"

"Still in the process of getting rid of the possums and possible raccoons. However, my overall experience is GREAT! The staff is very knowledgeable and answered each of my questions without hesitation. Certainly would call them again if needed. I've already recommended them to other family members. "We discovered bees burrowing in our home and found Suburban Pest on Angie's List. They had great reviews so we hired them. They came out the very next day and quite efficiently treated the problem. The service person was polite, knowledgeable and professional. The whole process took less than 30 minutes, and they even gave us a discount for using Angie's List!"

Pest Control questions, answered by experts

Roaches have a strong sense of smell and are repelled by a variety of potent aromas. Scents that can help deter them include citrus (such as lemon and orange), herbs like peppermint, mint, basil, thyme, and oregano, spices like bay leaves, cinnamon, clove, and garlic, as well as lavender, eucalyptus, citronella, tea tree oil, and vinegar.

You can use these scents in several ways to create an unwelcoming environment for roaches:

  • Plants: Place mint or lavender plants in your home or garden.

  • Powders and Leaves: Sprinkle garlic powder or place crushed bay leaves and citrus peels in high-risk areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and entry points.

  • Sprays: Create a diluted solution with scents like lemon or vinegar to spray in your home. These can also be used in cleaning products or as room fresheners.

  • Essential Oils: While essential oils of these scents can be used, be cautious as they can be toxic to pets if inhaled.

It is important to note that while these smells can help keep roaches away, they typically do not kill them and may not be enough to drive out an existing infestation entirely. For best results, combine these scent-based deterrents with regular cleaning. Be sure to clean up all food spills, crumbs, and dirty dishes promptly, and keep trash cans covered with a tight-fitting lid to remove potential food sources.

You should never block both the top and bottom of your chimney. Proper airflow is essential because the temperature inside the chimney will still fluctuate as your house warms and cools. Moisture can build up without ventilation, leading to dampness in your walls over time. Blocking the top prevents debris and animals from entering, but the chimney still needs air circulation to avoid condensation issues. Allowing the chimney to breathe maintains the health of your home and prevents long-term damage.

Due to the high temperatures used during heat treatments, many things must be removed from the area. The most vital things to ensure you remove are living things like pets and plants. To prevent damage to your belongings, you should also remove items such as electronics, flammable products, food, and anything else that the heat may damage.

Heat is the most effective instant killer of bed bugs. Exposing them to temperatures above 131 degrees Fahrenheit for over an hour can eliminate them. Methods like steam cleaners and using a dryer on high heat are effective for this. Other options that can kill bed bugs on contact include EPA-approved pesticides, bleach, disinfectant sprays with alcohol, diatomaceous earth, and hydrogen peroxide. While freezing can work, it is not an instant solution, as it can take several days at 0 degrees Fahrenheit to be effective. Keep in mind that many DIY treatments won't reach bed bugs hidden in cracks or behind walls. For severe infestations or the most effective results, it is best to hire a professional exterminator for a professional heat or chemical treatment.

You can get rid of raccoons quickly by making your home an undesirable place to live. Here are the best ways to get rid of raccoons fast:

  • Repair broken vents and screens leading to your home.

  • Seal open access points into your home. Many raccoons sneak in through the attic, roof, or chimney.

  • Trim trees and branches so raccoons don’t have easy access to your roof and chimney.

  • Thoroughly clean out garbage cans, remove all trash, and secure the bins.

  • Don’t keep food or water outside.

  • Add raccoon guards to outdoor bird feeders.

  • Clean up brush around your home—raccoons like to gather loose yard materials for bedding.
