"Tim and his crew were there all day, every day until the work was finished. They did a beautiful job on most things: they're fantastic with structural and electrical work, and the new ceilings, windows, and fence all look great. A few of the finishing touches weren't as high-quality as the rest of their work, but overall we were very happy. I should have asked for a more detailed estimate in writing up front, as the final price came out to more than we were expecting--but that was largely because we kept asking them to do more! But they were trustworthy, and accounted for every dollar they spent. I would definitely hire them again."

"Joe has been very professional and we are very happy with work so far. Weather stopped us short of finishing in fall, so looking forward to seeing everything complete. I have a relative who is a retired professional painter. He gave me a list of questions to ask. Joe answers were all what I was told to expect from a quality painter. We would use Joe again for projects or painting."

"My downstairs bathroom flooded out right into my family room. Bathroom needed extensive work, and certain parts of my rugs were destroyed by the water and needed to be replaced.. On a different matter I noticed that my ceiling downstairs in my family room was leaking water. .I have had contractor after contractor up to my home telling me that my complete shower needed to be replaced and my ceiling downstairs needed to be gutted out which was going to cost me big time money which I could not afford.. So I had Darrick take a look at it and he noticed that there were several cuts on my shower floor. So Darrick put in a concrete floor in my shower, and now the leaking stopped. Not only does it worked great but it also looks beautiful, shower doors look like new.. And the cost of this was very very reasonable ..It was a pleasure having Darrick here in my home ..He is a man of great character and a very honest person with compassion for every one.. If I ever need some work done in my house in the future I would not hesitate 1 second to give him a call.."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You may need a permit to install your window seat. Even though it's an indoor modification, some municipalities require permits for any built-ins added to homes. Check with your carpenter or, if you're DIY-ing, do some research on your city's requirements.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.
