"Eddie was very kind and fast to communicate! His team arrived on-time to repave a large section of our driveway and is coming back to finish with seal coating. He was helpful with answering my requests and went above and beyond to do additional work on our driveway!"

"I have the best looking property in the neighborhood. I pay to have a few more things done than the average homeowner and boy does it show. Everyone comments on how amazing my property looks. I think the best service Brian provides is designing and putting in new features such a s a patio with full bar, new stone and gravel driveway and feature plantings with specialized lighting."

Customers say: True professional

"Incredible service from start to finish. John and his team showed up and had my driveway completed within 4 hours, cleaned up the site, and rescued my driveway from its disrepair. I would happily hire him again. However because he did such a good job I probably won't need to for many many years. Definitely consider him and his team for your driveway in the future."

"Excellent work. Very nice people. We liked what they did so much that we had them come back and expand the driveway. Even though it was only a small job, they came back and did great work. Highly recommended."

"Mike and his crew at MFS dis a great job! Considering using them to do the driveway to match the steps that they did for me. They were scheduled to do the job in 2 days and finished it in one. Would definitely recommend them to others."

Small jobs welcome

"Sprague Paving did a top-notch job on our driveway including re-modeling of the drainage pattern in front of our garage which has prevented water entry, and building a bern to prevent water movement to our sidewalk. Great work. Polite professionals! Will hire them again when required."

"I hired Augustus Landscaping and Design to repair the front paver stairs at my home after the existing steps had become cracked, uneven, and unsafe over time. My goal was to restore them safely without doing a complete rebuild. The finished stairs look solid, level, and safe to use again, and the overall cost was significantly lower than several full replacement estimates I received from other companies. As with many older repair projects, additional issues were discovered once the stairs were opened up, but the work was completed and the original safety concerns were addressed. Communication was straightforward and the project had more of a practical repair approach rather than a large construction-company process, which worked fine for the type of job I needed completed. Overall, I appreciated that Augustus Landscaping and Design was willing to take on a repair project that other contractors either priced extremely high or did not follow through on."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

Since it has a smoother surface using a mixture of finer rock and sand, 41A tends to be the best asphalt grade for a driveway, especially for residential driveways. Other options are available, but more homeowners choose 41A for a smoother asphalt driveway. Talk with your asphalt driveway professional for recommendations of the best grade for your specific driveway.

To ensure you hire a reliable and experienced paving company, you should start by finding companies in your area that have at least five to ten years of experience working in your neighborhood. Next, rule out companies with poor reviews online or a series of complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau. Since driveways affect your curb appeal, you should also ask each company for references and pictures of recent work to make sure the work the company does is professional and high quality. Finally, check that the company is licensed and insured.

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.
