"f you want the short story- put your mouse away, close the computer, stop the hours of research and reading reviews. Pick up your phone and call Alexs (845) 741-8607. This is the only company you will need for all of your new or old construction needs, at very reasonable rates. Keep in mind, AMV is in demand and you should schedule ASAP if going forward. Now for the long story- sit down grab a beer or cup of coffee. Meet the amazing crew: Aleks (the Magician), Mike (the Perfectionist), Benny (the Astounding Albanian) and Jerm (the Talking Bull). After calling AMV for an estimate, Aleks scheduled a next day appointment. Aleks shows up at our agreed time and this is where the best contractor experience I have ever had begins. We go over the scope of work I would like done. There is one task Aleks tells me up front, that he has never done before, and that is the knockdown texture on the ceiling. Rather than bringing in another contractor just for the ceiling, we agree to give it a try with the understanding if I do not like it, I will not be charged. Aleks points out the many mistakes I had in my design thoughts. We go over his suggestions, which I might add, were all beneficial up the line. There was no up selling, just great ideas. Two days later I receive an email with proposal, we make some changes, and agree on the price and start date. The magic transition begins on the start date agreed on. The van pulls into my driveway at 8:15 AM, just like it did every day going forward. Starting each morning with a handshake and hello, the day begins. For the most part, you can expect a full day of work each day. The exception would be if the crew has completed one task and there is no sense in starting a new task with time constraints. You will always see either Aleks or Mike with Benny or Jerm, or all 4 on any given day. The biggest take away here is that these guys do not cut corners and will do ANYTHING to make the job right, and you happy. Another worthy note to keep in mind is, along with quality work, AMV uses only top quality materials, right down to the screws and nails. I remember at one point, my wife and I were not sure of our choice of backsplash color that we had picked out. Aleks already had six square feet up on the wall. We told him we were not feeling our choice of color. His response was, “No problem, I can take it down now. I will start over with your new tile, don’t settle, you will be looking at it for a long time. You have to love it now.” If that wasn’t enough, the new tile we picked out that night at Lowes needed to be special ordered, with a two week delay. I called Aleks from Lowes, knowing he had his next job scheduled during that time period. His response was, “Get what you like and we can work it out.” I realize time is money and I caused him extra time. The only thing in his thought process was to make me happy. By the way, Aleks did his homework on the knockdown texture. He was relentless until he got it right. It looks great! I would like to touch on my comment, “plenty of extras.” Here are just two examples. The crew was constantly going up and down my basement stairs for supplies. While doing so, Aleks noticed that my stairs were shifting from the wall. He made me aware of the danger of collapsing. At some point, I go to use the stairs myself and bingo, the stairs are sturdy like new. The other example is, I had a charging cord for my cordless vac, going from my dining room outlet and wrapping around the wall and basement door jam, to the vac on the wall of the stairs. Next thing I know, I have an outlet on the wall of the stairs for direct connection to my vac. Tell me, what contractor does this without gouging you? I am convinced, you will not come across a more honest and helpful group of guys in the construction business. From what I’ve seen, they can do it all. You need to call AMV for your next job! The only thing left to say is that our dining room/kitchen looks more amazing than we ever dreamed of and the deck will last a hundred years. Thank you Guys, for an amazing job well done."

"Dave Nessel and his stellar company, Unique Construction NY Inc. are the BEST. Allow me tell you why- On May 15th 2022 at 5:45 p.m., my house was hit by, what electrical engineers later estimated, was at least 80,000 volts of lightning. That huge, direct surge of energy destroyed all the systems and contents that made my house more than four walls and a roof. In addition to the bolt of lightning destroying all the systems in the house, it caused a violent, destructive fire. Thankfully I was home at the time of the incident, or the house would have quickly burned down all the way down and my pets would have suffered a terrible fate. Still, after all was said and done what had been my home for seventeen years was reduced to nothing more than an outer shell. I was immediately forced into the position to find, hire, and organize tradesmen from all specialties, negotiate the endless complexities of homeowners insurance, all while trying to find a place to live and continuing my self-employed full-time work schedule. It quickly became clear I needed the services of a general contractor. I interviewed a couple, but as soon as I met Dave I knew he was the man for the job. Dave was always on time or early. He went through the house with a fine tooth comb for hours, noticing things and problems from the destruction I hadn't noticed. His expertise of every level of construction and understanding of all aspects of housing systems (electrical, plumbing, etc) was unmatched by anyone else I had interviewed. Additionally he had an understanding of the homeowner insurance protocols and was able to interject as a supporting role (only when needed, Dave never undermined me -I'm a single female homeowner-) with professional, easy to read, paperwork, accurately demonstrating all costs. I'm confident his detailed documentation made the long slog of negotiations with my insurance representatives a little easier. Under his expert guidance, his company gutted and rebuilt my old house to beautifully modern standards while maintaining its historical charm. The rebuild came in precisely on budget and two weeks early. Dave's company Unique Construction handled my complex situation with upstanding processional skill, old fashioned kindness, and outstanding forthrightness. Dave and his crew treated me with respect, rebuilt my home, and provided a little hand holding & TLC when it seemed I needed it and I'm eternally grateful. Anyone reading this should hire Unique Construction!"

"Tom was a pleasure to deal with. He arrived on time, did a complete walk through and explained the process. I like Toms system of charging by the hour ( $45 per man) rather than an over inflated number guaranteed to protect the contractor. He did not mark up the materials either. He and his crew (which included his son who ran the project) worked diligently, they were punctual and professional. The completed job was a work of art. Tom communicated daily and was always available to answer any questions. From the time I first met Tom I was impressed by his sincerity, knowledge and honesty. I am so thrilled that we are employing Tom for other projects around the house. I truly think considering Tom for your next home project would be a wise decision. Thank you Tom!"

"I met with Mark once to review what I wanted in my new garage, doors/windows/electric, etc. The second meeting he had my plans with a virtual rendition. I made one or two minor changes and got my plans on my third visit. After I selected my contractor and the Town needed an additional calculation Mark turned it around in 24 hours and I was on my way to getting my building permit. The contractor didn't have any problems reviewing the plans. He felt everything was in order. I don't anticipate any problems with construction related to the plans. Mark was easy to work, he was thorough, he made suggestions. Mark turned all this around for me very quickly both times. Back in Jan/Feb when we first met and I got the plans, and then again in May when the Town required some additional information. No extra charge. Thanks, Mark!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.
