The size of a pipe isn’t always the outside or inside diameter. Rather, it’s a nominal diameter that depends on the type of pipe. For male pipes, you’ll need to measure the outside diameter. For female pipes, you’ll need to measure the inside diameter. You’ll then need to use a nominal diameter conversion chart to get the actual pipe size you’d buy in the store.

Worn-out rubber washers or O-rings are some of the most common causes of a leaky tub faucet. These small rubber parts create watertight seals within the faucet. However, they can deteriorate over time because of mineral deposits and water pressure. If you have a cartridge-style faucet, a cracked or damaged cartridge can also be the culprit. Regular use of the handles wears down these faucet parts, and they eventually start allowing water to seep through and create a drip.

If you don’t want to remove the sink stopper, pour ½ cup of baking soda and 2 cups of boiling water down the drain. Start by pouring 1 cup of boiling water, then the baking soda, followed by the remaining cup of boiling water. Use caution as boiling water can damage PVC or other plastic piping. Using a scrub brush or slightly abrasive sponge, clean the top of the stopper, and run the faucet to ensure the drain is clear and the stopper is clean. 

You can use normal solder, which consists of a tin and copper alloy, on copper pipes. You should avoid using leaded solder, especially if you're soldering together water supply lines, as it will contaminate drinking water. One way to test if your copper pipes contain lead is to scrape off the solder. If the scraped area is shiny, it likely contains lead.
