"What a great person to deal with he took time out of his busy schedule to just to take a look at my generator. Then while taking a look he automatically seen a few problems and fixed them right away. Would hire him in a heartbeat for future problems"

"Rich is extremely professional and is a top notch electrician. He installed a manual transfer switch for the new backup generator we will now use at our home if we lose power. His pricing was competitive and he went the extra mile for us and neatly labelled entries on the panel and even installed a light above the new panel which we can light up when the power's out. I highly recommend him and will use him again and am recommending him to friends and family."

"We recently changed homeowner insurance companies. During our walk through, the new company stated that we had to have an old unused oil tank removed from our basement. My first instinct was to go to Google, where I found that it was very difficult to find companies whom performed this type of service. My next instinct was to try Angie's List. After calling several providers, I was receiving quotes from $325 - $800. We chose to go with High Octane for two reasons: A) The price was the best and B) I submitted for an online quote and they responded very promptly. That same day, they came out to our home and gave us a more concrete quote and we scheduled our appointment. We are very satisfied with not only the work that they performed, but the level of professionalism we received.

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

While standby generators provide essential backup power, they can fail when you need them most due to lack of maintenance, fuel supply issues, dead batteries, electrical problems, or improper installation. To avoid costly failures, professional installation and regular maintenance are crucial. Licensed technicians ensure safety, uphold warranty requirements, comply with regulations, and provide expert servicing.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.
