"I had Countywide Paving pave my driveway, and unfortunately, the experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. The craftsmanship was laughable. It was evident that little care or attention to detail was put into the job. Not only did this compromise the aesthetic appeal of my property, but it also raised concerns about the longevity and durability of the driveway. After two years, the sides of the driveway began to crumble and fall apart. Large cracks began to form near the middle and pieces of the driveway have since come off. I reached out to Brian for help, because he guaranteed that the driveway would be under warranty for 5 years. Brian initially responded and told me he would fix the driveway, no problem. He took down my information and said that he would get right back to me. Well that was over a year ago. My calls went unanswered, and text messages ignored. It has been incredibly frustrating to be left in the dark, especially considering the substantial investment I made in their services. Overall, my experience with Countywide Paving was deeply disappointing. Their lack of professionalism, coupled with subpar workmanship and poor communication, left me feeling cheated and dissatisfied. Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

Asphalt can get sticky in high temperatures and intense sunlight and is better for cooler or moderate climates, while concrete is more likely to crack in colder climates where water can seep into the slab and freeze. Asphalt requires more maintenance in terms of sealing, it has a slightly shorter lifespan, on average, and it’s a bit more expensive to install. Concrete will last longer with less maintenance, and it offers you more options for customization, including staining and stamped patterns. As such, a concrete driveway adds to home value more than an asphalt driveway in many cases.

There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Asphalt does better in cold climates and works well with radiant heat systems. Porous asphalt is also excellent for wet climates, as it allows the water to drain away. However, it does get unpleasantly hot in the summer and requires more maintenance than concrete.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues. 

Asphalt is cost-effective, quick to install, and offers longevity with proper maintenance.
