"I recently had the pleasure of working with Oaks Roofing and Siding on a full siding replacement project, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. From the very first consultation to the final walkthrough, the entire experience was seamless, professional, and truly customer-focused. The team took the time to understand my vision and provided expert guidance on materials, colors, and design options that would best complement my home. Communication was outstanding throughout the process—every question I had was answered promptly and thoroughly, and I always felt informed and involved. What really stood out was their attention to detail and commitment to quality. The crew arrived on time each day, worked efficiently, and maintained a clean and safe worksite. They treated my home with the utmost respect, and the craftsmanship was top-notch. The new siding has completely transformed the look of my house—it’s like a brand-new home! Siding questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can mix siding types to create a unique design. However, it requires thoughtful planning to execute properly. The installation process will also be more time-consuming than if you were to choose either vertical or horizontal for the entire home, so it will cost you more in labor and design costs.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

Many people remove aluminum siding to get to the wood underneath, allowing them to paint, stain, or finish the wood to give the home a brand-new aesthetic. With that in mind, you find plywood and related types of wood underneath aluminum siding, but you also run into fiber cement board, strand board, and a diverse array of other building materials. It depends on the original design of the house.

As stunning and natural as stone siding is, it's not for everyone. Some popular siding alternatives to stone siding include:

  • Aluminum siding

  • Brick veneer siding

  • Engineered wood siding

  • Fiber cement siding

  • Wood siding

  • Vinyl siding

If you want the look of natural stone siding without the high material and installation costs, vinyl siding may be one of the best alternatives. It’s lightweight, low-cost, and low maintenance but does have a lower life span than natural stone.

You can calculate the required square footage of siding you need by measuring the height and width of your home’s rectangular exterior walls. For the triangular-shaped gable walls, measure the height from the ground to the tallest gable point to make sure you have enough for good coverage. Once you have combined the totals for each wall, add another 10% to account for wasted materials. It’s also good to have extra siding on hand to tackle wood siding repair down the road.
