"Angstrom Testing used a moisture meter and found that one of the kitchen walls and an area of the kitchen ceiling in my mom's apartment were wet. Then they took an air sample in the kitchen and sent the sample to the lab to determine the level of mold in the air. After that, they made a cut into the wet area of the kitchen ceiling and found a dripping water pipe. The top side of the ceiling was black with mold. They also took a piece of sheetrock out of the top of the wet kitchen wall and found more mold on the back of the wall (yuck!!).
They called me two days later with the air test results, and they told me that the level of mold in the air was very high. They also told me that there was probably a connection between my mom's symptoms and high levels of mold in the air. Makes sense. They also told me that that my mom should stay upstairs with me and my husband until we get rid of the moldy ceiling and wall in her apartment.
A few days after they called, Angstrom emailed me a report with all of the details of what they did and found. In the report, they wrote recommendations and procedures that a mold removal contractor should follow to safely remove the mold and dry and treat the wood wall frames and wood ceiling. Since the level of mold in the air was so high, they said in their report that the kitchen air should be cleaned with an air cleaner and that the kitchen appliances, cabinets, and floor should be wiped down to get rid of all the mold spores that were laying around.
I really appreciated all the work they did and all of the advice that they gave me to help me and my mom. My mom is now living upstairs with me and my husband, and she says that she is already starting to feel better. Although my husband is not too happy (LOL). Great company! Thanks.

Ground water infiltration occurred through the concrete slab in two rooms on the ground floor of the house causing water damage and mold growth on the overlying flooring. The cause of the water infiltration appears to be associated with cracks and a crater in the concrete slab, which is believed to have been caused by pile driving work being performed during the construction of an adjacent building.
Mold in HVAC Coil Compartment
Construction/demolition work in an apartment unavoidably released high levels of dust that migrated into adjacent apartments. Dust containment methods, such as negative air filtration and poly sheeting, should have been used to prevent dust migration into adjoining spaces. Settled dust samples were collected from a table & curtain rod in a nearby apt, which revealed the presence of substantially elevated levels of silica and asbestos in the dust. Asbestos and silica are known carcinogens.

"The rep came out and reviewed the areas of concern.  He gave me an estimate on the spot. The next day I decided to go with JBH and the project was scheduled for the following week.  The workers arrived within the scheduled time period and they were very pleasant to work with. They were responsive, efficient and neat. The job was completed in no time.

"We decided to fix our 27 yr old deck by replacing many of the boards, having it power washed, sanded and stained (2 coats). In addition we had them take down the existing lattice work and put up new lattice which they framed out beautifully. Harry's two men (Rob and Rick) were excellent. We are very happy with the quality of their work and would recommend them highly."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

The cost to replace a radon fan ranges from $300 to $600 for the fan itself, with installation adding an additional $200 to $500. Overall, the total cost for replacement can range from $500 to $1,100, depending on factors such as the fan model, home size, and local labor rates. If the fan is part of a larger radon mitigation system, the price may be higher.

The soil beneath your house is most likely what’s causing an increased level of radon. This is because soil holds radioactivity for a long time and it’s also what most buildings are built on. Another common source of radon is water from a source that hasn’t been through periodic radon tests, such as well water. Over time, the radon from the soil can inhabit other parts of your house like the foundation or plumbing.

The average radon mitigation system uses about 876 kWh of electricity per year, although the exact amount of electricity used will vary depending on the size of the radon fan. Once the system is installed, the annual increase to your energy bill could range from $30 to $300 per year, again depending on the size of the fan.

Your radon fan needs to operate 24/7 to be effective. The only time the fan isn't operating is during its replacement. Radon levels in the home can increase within hours if the fan stops working or something obstructs the stack vent. Fortunately, radon systems require no downtime maintenance between fan changes.

Radon is the number one non-smoking cause of lung cancer in the United States, but it can cause some other concerning side effects in the meantime. If you have a raspy voice, chest pains, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, or any of the above, don’t hesitate to perform radon testing and install a mitigation system as soon as possible.
