Yes, you can paint stone on the exterior of a house. It’s important to properly prep the stone by cleaning off dirt and debris. You’ll want to apply at least two coats of paint to get the most even and complete coverage. The length of time it takes to paint a house will depend on whether you’re doing it yourself or hiring a pro, and the time of year in which you’re planning to do it. A professional paint company can likely complete the job within three to four days, but they may need more time to account for bad weather. By contrast, it may take a week or more when opting to DIY. 

The number of coats you need to apply when whitewashing a surface depends on how opaque you want the final product to be. If you're going for a transparent, barely there look, a single coat or two may suffice. For fuller coverage, you'll want to use multiple coats. Another option is to use a less diluted paint to get a thicker coverage.
