"The two man crew arrived promptly. They recommended an articulating wall mout that could easily handle the weight of our 65" television and provide the best viewing angles from our sofas and recliners. They cut in boxes to run the electrical, hdmi, and all necessary audio/visual cords through the wall which gave the installation a very functional and professional look. They cleaned up thoroughly after they finished the job which took very little time to complete. We were extremely happy with the work they had done at a surprisingly reasonable price. We would recommend Northern Nevada Low Voltage to anyone looking for a professional installation."

"I called Jake on short notice to repair an electrical outlet in the garage (which continually tripped). He came out even though it was late in the day. He diagnosed the problem and replaced the GFI outlet. Great service. I will be contacting Jake when I am back in town to perform additional work at the house."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Appliances in your home that need dedicated circuits include:

  • Refrigerators and chest freezers

  • Electric ranges, microwaves, and toaster ovens

  • Dishwashers and garbage disposals

  • Washers and dryers

  • Heating and air conditioning units

  • Hot tubs, saunas, and water pumps

  • Sump pumps

  • Central vacuums

Whether or not a pool needs a dedicated circuit depends on the electrical needs of the motor, lights, and pump. Keep in mind that pool motors can use a lot of electricity. A dedicated circuit can prevent the breaker from tripping whenever you use the pool. A small motor for an equally small pool may only need a GFCI outlet. It’s best to plug it directly into the outlet rather than using an extension cord. You should also consult an electrician to ensure your pool’s electrical system is in accordance with local regulations.

You may not always need to hire a local electrician to install a doorbell camera. Wireless doorbell cameras, for instance, are simple enough for the average homeowner to install. They easily attach to your threshold and run on batteries, so no wiring is necessary.

However, wired doorbells with cameras likely require electrical work that should only be attempted by licensed electricians. You’ll need to call a pro if you’re working with a wired doorbell camera.

Wiring can last anywhere from 50 to 70 years, but all kinds of mishaps can occur that reduce the lifespan of your electrical wiring, including severe weather conditions, pests, and even faulty wiring. Keeping a preventative maintenance scheduling and hiring an electrician for an annual electrical inspection will keep your wiring system around for as long as possible.

No, both switches do not need to be on for a 3-way switch to work. When the two switches are in opposite positions, the circuit is open and the light is off. Flipping either switch closes the circuit and turns the light on. So, either switch can turn the light off independently, and both switches do not need to be in the same position for the switch to function.
