"The estimate was very expensive to install a single overhead lighting fixture (at about 12 feet overhead) but the technician was very efficient at getting the fixture installed correctly and, in the end, it was worth it to me NOT to have to climb a 12-foot ladder, risking life and limb. Itâ s a trade off I expect."

Small jobs welcome

"DC LLC/Chris McDaniel did an outstanding job for NNMC's El Rito Campus. They pulled electricity to our greenhouse and installed irrigation systems at both the greenhouse and our rain gardens. From start to finish, their work was top-notch ? knowledgeable, professional, and thorough. What really set them apart was how well they worked with our facilities team and how they kept communication open throughout the entire project. Chris genuinely cares about the quality of his work and it shows. They were helpful, responsive, and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend DC LLC for anyone looking for a reliable, skilled contractor. We couldn't have asked for a better experience."

"Chase and group were very delightful to work with. Chase came over afterwards and reapplied stones that had to be taken out and looks better than before! Also had one issue and Chase came out same day to fix. I would recommend him to anyone!"

"I think I have found my forever Electrician! In my area, it is hard to find reliable contractors. Mike was incredibly knowledgeable and punctual! If he sets up a time with you, he shows up before you. He’s very quick to get invoices and cost emailed to you as well. I found his pricing to be incredibly reasonable and fair. When it came to job completion, Mike was Johnny on the spot. He came in and handled his business and got out without any mishaps. I of course, inspected after he installed my switches, ceilings, fans, lights, and wired all my new receptacles. This man is an artist. Everything was incredibly clean and well laid out. He actually puts love in pride into what he does! I’m very happy with my service and I absolutely will be using him again! Thanks Mike for kicking butt and getting that project knocked out! It looks amazing and I couldn’t be happier!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

Whole-house generators can run continuously for extended periods, even for weeks at a time (around 400 to 500 hours), as long as they have a sufficient fuel supply. However, this type of extensive use will increase wear and tear and can shorten the generator's overall lifespan. During long periods of operation, it's important to check and refill the engine oil as needed, potentially as frequently as daily depending on the model. If your generator uses a fuel tank, ensure it is kept full to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.
