"This work was done on a system that had a boiler replaced 2 years ago by another company. I never felt that job was done properly. The original call was for no hot water. Determined that the circulating pump was bad, also confirmed my suspicion that the pressure gauge and valves weren't working properly. The pump was fixed right away but we had to wait on parts for the pressure valves. During this time I noticed that several heat zones were stuck on. It was determined that the zone valves were full of dirt and not closing. They replaced one faulty valve and got another shut off, but then another one failed. The boss (sorry I don't remember his name) suggested ,instead of replacing the valves one at a time ,to flush the system, replace all the valves at once and move them up off the floor so they would be easier and less messy to service. They also redid and cleaned up the wiring. At this point I asked for an estimate for all this and got a verbal estimate of $1800. I knew that the zone valves cost about $130 a piece, and the pipes are copper so I thought that was reasonable. We set a day that I could be home from work. I got a call from their office at 7:45 that morning that they were on the way. 2 and at times 3 men worked all that day, finished the job, thoroughly checked the system, and cleaned up their mess. The bill was for exactly the estimate which pleasantly surprised me. We still don't know where the dirt in the system came from but the boss took a water sample to have tested at the college to see if that tells us anything."

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

"He found the problem right away but didn't have the parts and would have had to order them but suggested we call San Juan Mobile Home Supply. They had the parts in stock, so I ran and got the parts. He waited for me then installed the parts. It was a good thing because that weekend was very cold."

"We needed someone to install tile around the bathtub at an apartment unit we own. Joey at 2 Daughters Handyman came to the rescue. He quoted us a fair price based on what we could see. However, once he started the work other complications were discovered such as mold behind the existing wall. Joey and his crew were able to take care of each issue and charged us a fair amount for the extra work performed. We were very impressed with his willingness to get the job done in a timely manner. He even went to two or three places on his own to find the tile we wanted. We will definitely use 2 Daughters again and would recommend them to anyone needing his services.

Sump Pump Installation questions, answered by experts

Repairs typically take 1-2 hours, while replacements, depending on accessibility, may require up to 4 hours.

To maintain your sump pump, start by checking it every three to four months to ensure it’s in working order. Clear any debris from the pit because blockages can prevent the pump from operating efficiently. You should also test the pump by pouring a bucket of water into the pit. If it turns on automatically and drains the water, it’s functioning correctly. Inspect the discharge line for clogs, and ensure it directs water away from your home. Once a year, clean the pump itself, and consider having it professionally serviced for optimal performance.

Every three to four months, you should clean any dirt and debris off of your sump pump. You should also check the inlet screen (at the bottom of the pump) to make sure that it isn’t blocked. On top of that, you should deep clean your sump pump once per year—or hire a sump pump pro to do it for you.

Yes, many providers offer warranties for new pumps and labor. Confirm terms before scheduling.

A sump pump's lifespan is typically 7 to 10 years, though the general range can be anywhere from 5 to 15 years. The specific type of pump is a major factor: pedestal sump pumps last an average of 20 to 25 years, whereas submersible sump pumps last between 5 and 15 years. While pedestal pumps are less expensive to service, they are also louder and more prone to clogging.

Several other factors influence longevity, including the pump's quality, usage frequency, and maintenance schedule. A high-quality pump that is well-maintained in a dry climate may last for two decades, while a lower-quality, poorly maintained pump in an area with a high water table or frequent flooding may fail in six years or less.

Regular maintenance, including annual inspections and tuneups from a professional, can significantly extend the pump's life. It is time to consider a replacement if your sump pump runs constantly, cycles frequently, shows visible rust or corrosion, or trips a circuit breaker. As a preventative measure, many homeowners replace their pumps every eight years. It's also worth noting that a manufacturer's warranty can indicate expected lifespan, and some home insurance policies may not cover water damage from a pump that is past its recommended replacement date.
