Water that pools under pavers can erode the soil foundation and weaken the paver structure. In some situations, it can also cause mold and mildew growth. If that happens, you may need to start budgeting for the cost to build and install a patio to replace the damaged one.

Brick is designed to absorb moisture, but it is also designed to let it evaporate as well. So in general, the goal shouldn’t necessarily be keeping moisture out but making sure it has the room to breathe. If you have excess moisture getting through your brick wall, it’s more likely that you have a crack or other issue at play that a typical sealant won’t fix. So, instead of investing in sealant, try repairing your brick wall instead.

If there is standing liquid on your concrete, remove it before attempting any of the above cleaning methods. For small amounts of water, use rags, a bucket, and a mop. For larger areas of liquid, lay down cat litter or baking soda to soak up the water first. If you have extremely large pools of water sitting on your concrete, break out the wet vac and get to work.

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.

In most cases, standard homeowners insurance policies cover water damage from sudden, accidental damage, like burst pipes and leaking appliances. However, water damage caused by flooding, groundwater seepage, or heavy rain is likely to be excluded from coverage. Check your policy to be sure, as some plans include opt-in flood insurance coverage. Certain companies also allow homeowners to add an optional water backup endorsement to a policy.
