While the part of the garbage disposal that attaches to the sink is universal, not every single disposal will work in every sink cabinet. Garbage disposals can last between 10 and 12 years, so if your unit is pushing its lifespan, it may be a good idea to replace it. If your unit isn’t approaching the 10-year mark, try investigating other parts of the disposal to see if there's an affordable repair on the horizon. For example, rubber has a shorter lifespan than 10 years, connections and hoses loosen over time, and sink flanges can cause leaks that have nothing to do with disposals.

These appliances do unscrew, but you need to disconnect everything properly when you replace your garbage disposal. Make sure you shut the power off to the area first and check that it’s off with a voltage detector. Disconnect the main drain line and P-trap, and then disconnect the dishwasher drain line if you have one connected. You can then unscrew your garbage disposal using a disposal wrench. Just make sure you disconnect the electrical lines before removing your appliance.

Garbage disposals fit the drains of nearly every sink out there due to universal drain hole sizes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, but the same isn’t true for the housing underneath the sink. You need plenty of room to fit a garbage disposal under there, so measure the space ahead of time and use those dimensions when shopping for a new model. If you’re replacing an existing model, get one in that size.
