"Unique Designs contacted me within days of submitting my kitchen remodel project. Mr. Alan Pando scheduled a meeting to show us a selection of products to choose from. After choosing the cabinets and the countertop desired, we received a price quote that was more than reasonable and based on customer reviews for Unique Designs, we chose to enter into a contract. When the materials arrived, Alan and his team arrived on site to begin the demolition of the existing kitchen cabinets and countertop and the subsequent installation of the new cabinets, countertop, cook top stove, and under-cabinet exhaust hood. Alan's team members are great ambassadors for his company. They are professional, courteous and accommodating. At the end of each day, the area was left as neat and clean as possible. Needless to say, this company will be at the top of my list for future projects. Roy DeVille Las Cruces, NM"

Small jobs welcome

"Our dishwasher was installed incorrectly and some of the trim needed to be sanded down for it to fit properly. Bourbon Barrel Woodworks was able to do the job properly and smaller jobs in the kitchen as well at a fair price. He came when he said he would and everything was seamless. I would highly recommend."

Stone Countertops questions, answered by experts

The least porous countertop material is engineered quartz. Made from a blend of natural quartz and resins, it is non-porous and highly resistant to stains, scratches, and bacteria. This makes quartz countertops exceptionally low-maintenance and durable, ideal for kitchens and bathrooms where hygiene and easy upkeep are priorities. Other non-porous options include solid surface materials like Corian, which also offer excellent resistance to moisture and stains.

Since knowing how to install countertops correctly requires in-depth knowledge and understanding of the topic, we recommend hiring a professional countertops installer near you to work on this project. Kitchen countertops are a high-visibility investment, meaning mistakes made during DIY installation will be easy to spot, may cause damage, and potentially require re-purchasing materials. Professional countertop installers have the skills, tools, and experience to place your new kitchen feature safely and correctly.

Silestone® is a brand of quartz countertops; one isn’t necessarily better, but they have their differences. Silestone® costs slightly more than the average quartz countertop because you’re paying for the brand name and unique features. For example, Silestone® is often more sustainable than regular quartz because you can purchase varieties made with recycled materials. It also has antibacterial properties and design options some homeowners prefer. Plus, you can use it across your whole kitchen rather than solely for countertops.

The frequency for sealing granite countertops depends on several factors, including the type of sealant used, the color of the granite, and how heavily the countertops are used. As a general guideline, resealing is often recommended every 12 to 18 months, but some sources suggest it could be as often as every few months or at least once a year.

The type of sealant is a major factor: water-based sealants may need reapplication every six months to a year, while more durable solvent-based sealants can last for five to 10 years. Additionally, factors like heavy kitchen traffic, frequent use of acidic cleaners, and lighter granite colors may require more frequent sealing to prevent staining.

To determine if your countertops need resealing, you can perform a simple water test. Place a few drops of water or a wet paper towel on an inconspicuous area of the granite. After 10 to 15 minutes, check the spot. If the water has beaded up, the seal is still intact. If the water has been absorbed and darkened the stone, it's time to apply a new coat of sealant. You can choose to seal the granite yourself or hire a professional to ensure it's done correctly.

If you're looking to break up a stone slab or some landscaping stone, the process is very similar to breaking up a boulder, and may in fact be easier because it is easier to access and not as deeply buried into the ground.
