"It could not have gone any better. They did exactly what they had promised and at a fair price. This was a hard job being over my dad's house and they were amazing with how they were able to complete this job. They were very safety minded and did an excellent job of clean up after the job was completed. I have no reservations recommending Mike and Gail Mason and Quality Tree Care. Not only do they do excellent work, they are just nice people."

"Loya's came out to Portales to trim a some very large tree limbs a couple of weeks ago. They did an outstanding job in terms of removing the branches from the tree while preserving the tree and insuring that none of the branches hit the house. Moreover, throughout the project they kept in regular contact with us regarding the status of the project. I highly recommend their services and will be hiring them again."

"Leon is the best!! In my six years of property management I've never seen an apartment so dirty and demolished. Leon came the next day and worked endlessly until the job was done. Him and his team were very polite and friendly. (Despite the horror inside) They took out all of the trash, broken fixtures, and even the carpet. And then cleaned the whole apartment!! I would recommend his company to anyone."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

It’s possible to transplant trees as tall as 50 feet when an experienced tree planting service uses the right equipment. However, a tree with a trunk larger than two or three inches in diameter needs to be handled by a professional in order to yield successful transplanting results. Consulting a tree planting professional is the best way to tell if your large tree can be safely transplanted.

If executed correctly your tree should survive after being transplanted to a new spot. However, effective transplanting requires six months, careful root pruning, safe transport to the new location, and replanting in prime soil conditions. You’ll also need an appropriately sized root ball for a complete tree transplant. A good rule of thumb is that, for every inch in diameter, your tree’s root ball needs to be around 11 inches. So a tree with a diameter of six inches needs a root ball of approximately 66 inches.

The best time to transplant a tree is when it is dormant. For many trees, this means either in the fall after the leaves have dropped (around October or November) or in early spring before new growth begins (around March). The ideal timing can depend on the type of tree. Deciduous trees do well when moved in early spring or fall, while evergreens are best transplanted in early spring or late summer. For example, pine trees are best moved in early fall, but maples prefer late fall. Avoid transplanting in winter, as the frozen or hard, cold soil poses a significant risk to the roots and prevents the tree from acclimating properly.

Pruning trees is important for several reasons. It improves tree health and strength by removing dead, diseased, or unwanted branches, which in turn encourages new growth and can help treat disease. For fruit trees, proper pruning can lead to a larger and better-quality harvest. Pruning also enhances safety by removing weak limbs that could break and fall, potentially causing injury or property damage, especially during storms. Beyond these functional benefits, pruning can also improve a tree's appearance. To ensure pruning is done correctly for the tree's long-term health, consider hiring a professional.

Trees that flower in the spring—like dogwood, cherry, magnolia, and pear—should not be pruned during the winter. These spring-flowering plants grow buds on old growth, so you’ll actually remove what would’ve been gorgeous flowering foliage. Instead, wait to prune until right after they bloom, when the flowers fade.
