"Juan Caldera replaced the back-splash in our kitchen. His team took the old tile off without replacing the drywall. They installed our new ceramic tile and calked it. It only took two days. They were highly professional and did a perfect job. I will be hiring them back soon to install tiles on some outside steps to the home. Don't hesitate to use Juan Caldera. We have already recommended him to several tile stores in town."

"Matthew and his crew removed a bathtub and created an amazing tiled shower. They tiled the walls, ceiling and floor and finished it off with a niche, bench and infinity drain. They were clean, respectful, fast, gave honest pricing and truly did a remarkable job. Iâ  d recommend him over and over!"

"Gabe did an awesome job helping us repair tile that had been lifted up due to water seeping under and freezing. Gabe repaired 5 major areas on the portals surrounding my late mother's home so we could put it on the market with it looking perfect. He shared tile options since the area is 26 years old and the tiles couldn't be matched. Gabe designed a way to lay in new tiles so that it looks intentional. Gabe is an extremely hard worker, VERY skilled, has all the tools, and comes up with creative solutions. I plan to use him on three more tile projects at my home. He is awesome - you will be happy with his work!"

"They arrived when they said they would. They did the demo removal of broken tile with minimal dust. They did an excellent installation of floor tile; even, level. Cleaned up the work area at the completion. Very courteous workers. Good price for a difficult job. I would hire them again."

Small jobs welcome

"Joe was an absolute professional. He was on time, communicative, and courteous. He took the time to listen to what we wanted and how we wanted everything to look then he executed it perfectly. Our kitchen and bath tile look amazing. Joe did a fantastic job and did it in the time he quoted us. Wouldn’t hesitate to work with him again and definitely will recommend him when anyone asks for a good home improvement pro. (Something that can be tough to find in Santa Fe.)"

"Kramer Moore of Do-Moore Handyman Services is one of the hardest working young men I've had the pleasure to meet. In addition to doing an excellent job at replacing my carpet with tile, he was extremely helpful in making sure that moving of furniture and goods was done carefully. He kept me informed at every step of the process. He's personable and efficient."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Grout and caulk are commonly used together, especially in bathrooms. Grout goes between the tiles and keeps them sturdy and in place on the walls or floor. Caulk goes in corners or where two different materials meet (like where the bathtub meets the tile) to create a waterproof seal. However, they are not interchangeable—you shouldn't use caulk to adhere tile and shouldn’t use mortar if you need a waterproof seal.

If you’re out of spacers for your tile installation, you can use pennies. Each time you place a tile, stick the pennies around the edges (on the sides and the corners). Like working with spacers, you’ll want the same amount of space around each tile before they set.

To ensure an even and unbending surface to lay tiles on, you’ll typically need to put a subfloor under a tile floor. Fiber cement backboards are the most common choice, but using plywood is also possible. Don’t neglect this step, or you could risk water damage and grout or tiles prematurely cracking or crumbling, especially in an area with high foot traffic.

When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

On the other hand, when you try to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s a lot more work, it’s hard to be precise, and mistakes or miscalculations can lead to future moisture damage to the tiling, grout, and subfloor.

The number of boxes of tile you need depends entirely on the amount of tile in each box or case. Different manufacturers package their tiles differently, and boxes contain different amounts of tile depending on the size, shape, and material. Often, the amount of area that a case will cover is listed in the product description. To calculate the number of boxes you need, take the total square feet of the space and divide it by the number of square feet the box will cover.
