"The summer of 2018, we were extraordinarily fortunate to work with the 50-year-old, second generation Santa Fe firm of Babcock Construction known for their expertise in new construction and renovation. We had the benefit of all the Babcock principals of which there are three, the patriarch Joe, who founded the firm in 1968 and his two sons, Richard and Steve each with 45 and 40 years’ experience respectively. All three bring particular specialties, perspectives and gifts to any job. On the team were their long standing first rate sub-contractors: tile setter, electrician, plumber, painter plus their in house carpenters. Our expectations were high, since both of us have backgrounds in new construction, renovation and historic preservation. The job consisted of renovating our Tesuque, NM 3000 sq.’ adobe style stucco house with the work on the garden scheduled for next spring. The three qualities that were present throughout are on-time completion at every stage of the project and attention to a very high level of detail on all aspects of the job. Of equal importance on the job is their overarching belief in solutions, not problems, which dictated each day’s outcome throughout the two and a half months. Other qualities that the three brought were attentive listening and a high degree of collaboration with each other and the clients. This project was a complete success and a pleasurable collaboration also filled with moments of humor and kindness. We recommend them very highly for anything needed done on a house."

"The service went very well.  I called and asked if a plumber could come and change our expansion tank off of our hot water heater and was told that the plumber would be there between 1 and 3.  About 15 minutes before 1, the plumber called and asked if he could come by.
The service at the house went well and he used buckets and towels to make sure he didn't spill water everywhere.  The water that did drip on our garage floor was cleaned up before he left.
They accept credit cards and are very professional, I'd use them again!

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Start by locating your main water shut-off valve, which is critical for emergencies in slab-on-grade homes common throughout New Mexico. Test your water quality and inspect the water heater, as hard water accelerates damage to fixtures. Schedule a camera inspection for your sewer lateral to identify damage from shifting caliche soil. Finally, confirm your outdoor hose bibs shut off properly before winter freeze events.

Helpful?

Reject any quote missing a valid state license number. Avoid contractors who discourage pulling permits or pressure you to skip required city inspections. Quotes for underground work must explicitly detail how the contractor will excavate hard caliche soil. Ensure the professional has dedicated residential experience rather than just oilfield background. Finally, confirm the contractor addresses the impact of Hobbs hard water on your system.

Helpful?

Diagnose issues carefully in Hobbs. Wet spots in dry caliche soil strongly indicate a leaking underground pipe. Wall stains point to active leaks, though intense summer monsoons cause similar roof damage. Low water pressure stems from mineral buildup or municipal supply issues. Address gas smells immediately by contacting your utility provider. Foundation cracks require assessments from both a foundation specialist and a plumbing professional.

Helpful?

Timelines for plumbing in Hobbs depend heavily on local factors. Hard caliche soil doubles excavation time for underground work. High demand from the Permian Basin oil industry extends scheduling backlogs by several weeks. Additionally, local permit processing and required city inspections add several days to the schedule. Expect delays during sudden winter freeze events, which cause emergency calls to surge across NM.

Helpful?

Several property features complicate plumbing in Hobbs. Dense caliche soil requires heavy mechanical equipment for any underground trenching. Many older homes feature aging galvanized pipes and slab-on-grade foundations, requiring concrete removal to access buried lines. Furthermore, the region's exceptionally hard water causes severe mineral buildup inside pipes and fixtures. Flat terrain also demands precise grading and slope engineering for exterior drainage systems across NM.
