"The soil pipe on our roof caused a leak in the wall where
there are kitchen cabinets, a built in microwave and the oven,
so we needed to replace the cabinets, which ultimately led to a total kitchen
remodel.
We received estimates from a few contractors, and we finally
decided to select Don to do the work.
When he informed us that he would not be available for five
months, we told him that we were willing to wait for him because we just felt
that he would be the best person to do the work. We are glad that we did!
We had a positive experience with Don. Of course we have
heard horror stories about contractors in terms of not being reliable, taking
too long and not doing quality work. We experienced none of those problems with
Don. The job took two and a half weeks from start to finish, and then a couple
of hours to follow up on a few minor ?punch list? items.
The extent of the work included: taking down old cabinets,
repairing the damaged wall, replacing the old cabinets with new ones, replacing
old lighting fixtures with recessed lighting, replacing laminate countertops
with granite, replacing a vinyl floor with ceramic tile, adding a backsplash
and installing new stainless steel appliances. He also took care of some minor
repairs in our bathroom and dining room, which also sustained damage due to the
broken soil pipe.
From the time he started the demo work until the end of the
job, he was available and willing to answer all of our questions. What we
valued the most about Don was his efficiency and knowledge, while also
exhibiting a sense of urgency and doing a quality job. He recommended several
vendors for us to work with in terms of sourcing materials (cabinets, granite,
flooring, etc.), and for the most part, we did not have any real problems with
any of them. He made several suggestions that really helped us when making
decisions, and we appreciated his expertise. He even added a couple of
unexpected touches that helped to make the kitchen ?pop?
He and his able bodied assistant Don were very respectful of
our house, and we were able to work around them and vice-versa. When friends
would ask us how our project was going, we would tell them, ?Our contractor is
running us, not the other way around!?, meaning that he was always on top of
what needed to get done, and we complied with what he needed us to do to make
the project go as smoothly as it did.
The kitchen looks wonderful; it turned out better than we
expected!
If you are looking for a very experienced, knowledgeable
contractor who is accessible and will do what he says he will do within a
reasonable time frame and expense, you should hire Don!

"Not happy at all with follow up. Estimate done in early October. Written Estimate received 10/14 via email. Every phone call had to be initiated by us the customer. Work was not started until 12/21/20. Price was very expensive for demo of the small shower, shower pan and concrete and installation of tiles that I purchased. Shower door will be provided by glass company that I will pay directly. Almost a $10,000 job just for a small shower which includes my $1,300 purchase of tiles and approximate price of $1,200 for the glass shower door. Owner not very good at communicating and was not on the job at all. His workers were pleasant and cleaned up after themselves but job was simple and average. Very pricey for a small job with average outcome. Waiting for return of workers after the holidays to install several pieces of bull nose that were broken and had to be replaced and for grouting to be completed."

"I originally had my kids bathroom completely remodeled and after seeing the result decided to also have my master bathroom remodeled. Both projects went well !!!! My first bathroom involved a new tub with tiling on the tub walls. A new tile floor, vanity and all fixtures. We removed a medicine cabinet and replaced the ceiling light/fan. The only aspect of the project left for me to do was paint. My master bathroom was much more difficult. It was a complete demo with a new tub and shower design. We enlarged the shower and reduced the tub area and both had to be constructed from scratch. The shower was completely tiled including a niche and the newly constructed tub cradle and surrounding walls tiled as well. Here too, new tile floor, vanity and all new fixtures. We removed the medicine cabinet and replaced the ceiling light/fan. This project also involved some plumbing movements for drain shifts and water lines so it was more complicated. In both cases, I cannot say enough about how the workers were timely, courteous and accommodating. They involved me in many aspects to make sure it was what I wanted. On demo day, a truck was sent to pick up all of the refuse so nothing was left on my property when they left for the day. Tarps were placed on the floor and rugs so nothing got soiled and they worked neatly cleaning up each day before leaving. Asver, our project manager kept in contact with me almost daily to make sure things were progressing as he and I had previously discussed. In the initial stages, he helped me to order the proper shower pan and door that this project required. He too was great to work with and seemed genuinely interested in this project. Both projects started on the original date that Asver told me they would and both took one week each, start to finish. I am extremely pleased at the final product for both bathrooms. I have and will continue to recommend the Basic Company to others."

Bathtub Replacement questions, answered by experts

The plumbing industry has standardized the sizes for bathtub drains. They are 1 1/2 inches wide to fit all standard bathtubs from 14 to 26 inches deep. The standard sizing is to ensure that the drain fits into the P trap, a special part of your piping that prevents sewer water from bubbling up into your home (yuck).

Professionals can enhance bathroom aesthetics by recommending and implementing design elements such as modern fixtures, high-quality tiles, and efficient layouts. They ensure cohesive style, compliment functionality, and an enhanced visual appeal in the space.

There are several ways to save money on a bathroom remodel through proper planning and savvy design strategies. To reduce costs, consider the following:

  • Purchase your own materials: Buy your own bathroom fixtures, hardware, and other materials to avoid contractor upcharges and delivery fees.

  • Shop smart for big-ticket items: Save on pricey items like tiles and tubs by shopping sales and at discount stores.

  • Avoid major layout changes: Keep plumbing in its current location. Opt to replace fixtures rather than moving them to avoid significant renovation work.

  • Focus on high-impact, low-cost updates: Make affordable but impactful smaller changes, such as upgrading hardware, installing new lighting, and adding stylish but economical accessories.

  • DIY where possible: Handle easier parts of the remodel yourself, like painting or installing light fixtures, to save on labor costs.

  • Time your remodel strategically: Consider remodeling in the spring, which tends to be a lower-demand time of year and may result in lower costs.

Technically, yes, you can put a shower on a Roman tub, but it's not common. The vast majority of Roman tubs are standalone models. Adding a shower would involve installing a ceiling-mounted curtain rod or a custom glass enclosure, as well as redoing the plumbing, making it neither easy nor budget-friendly.

What you include in your bathroom remodel will depend on your budget, personal preferences, and the current condition of your bathroom. Bathroom renovations often involve changing out the shower or tub, faucet, showerhead, tiles, flooring, mirrors, sink, cabinets, and vanities. You may also want to upgrade the wallcovering, adding new wallpaper or paint.
