"We recently had our basement waterproofed by the American A-1 Waterproofing Company, and I couldn't be happier with the job they did. From start to finish, the team at American A-1 Waterproofing was professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to ensuring that my basement would be completely waterproof. First, the team came out to assess my basement and provide me with a detailed estimate of the work that needed to be done. They took the time to explain the process to me, answer my questions, and address any concerns I had. I felt like they really listened to my needs and customized their approach to fit my specific situation. Once the work began, the team was punctual, respectful, and efficient. They took great care to protect our home and belongings, and they kept us updated throughout the process. They worked quickly but thoroughly, and we were impressed by their attention to detail. The waterproofing work itself was top-notch. The team used high-quality materials and techniques to ensure that every nook and cranny of my basement was completely sealed and protected from water damage. They also installed 3 sump pump and created a French drain to further safeguard our home. A-1 did a great job waterproofing our flooded and leaking basement. They kept coming back as bigger rainstorms showed smaller leaks and waterproofed the inside and outside until stayed dry. Overall, I highly recommend American A-1 Waterproofing for anyone in need of basement waterproofing services. They are professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to ensuring customer satisfaction. Thanks to their hard work, I now have a safe and dry basement that I can enjoy for years to come!"

"The previous owner of our property used his French drain installation as a selling point, but shortly after we moved in we found water in the basement after a storm. It turned out that the "French drains" were a trench at the edges of the basement and a sump pump. The drains were not piped to the sump pump. We had Arid install real French drains with pipe to the sump pump well. Thus was in 2005 and we have not had any water in the basement since. Pat explained the job well and his team performed it quickly. They cleaned up well afterwards. The pump finally gave out last night (after almost 12 years). Arid is going to install new one on Friday."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Preventing future basement flooding often involves installing sump pumps, improving drainage, sealing foundation cracks, and maintaining gutters. Costs vary, but preventive measures can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the solutions chosen. Investing in prevention can save you money on future flooded basement cleanup costs and repairs.

While a standard gutter system is widely considered the most effective way to prevent water damage to your home's foundation, several alternatives are available. These options can be used on their own in certain climates or as supplementary protection.

Common alternatives include:

  • Rain Chains: These are decorative chains that hang from the roof's edge, guiding rainwater to the ground.

  • Drip Edges: These metal strips are installed at the edge of the roof to direct water away from the fascia. While often used with gutters, they can be paired with a ground-level solution but are typically not sufficient on their own.

  • Rain Dispersal Systems: These systems work by breaking up the heavy sheet of water flowing off the roof, dispersing it over a wider area.

  • French Drains: This ground-level system uses a perforated pipe in a gravel-filled trench to collect and redirect water runoff away from the house.

  • Drip Paths: Placed directly below the roofline, these paths made of concrete, stone, or other materials prevent soil erosion and guide water away.

It's important to note that some alternatives like rain chains and dispersal systems may not be adequate in regions with heavy rainfall because they don't divert water away from the foundation as effectively as a full gutter system. Ground-based solutions like French drains can be very effective but are often more expensive and can affect your landscaping and curb appeal. Many experts recommend installing a full gutter system for maximum protection and using alternatives as supplementary measures.

Yes, it is generally unhealthy and can be dangerous to live in a damp basement. The damp air can negatively affect your breathing and lungs, and the moisture promotes mold growth and pest infestations. Inhaling mold spores or waste particles from insects and rodents attracted to the moisture can be hazardous. This damp, moldy air can also circulate into your main living area. It is crucial to resolve any moisture problems and implement preventative measures before using your basement as a living space.

It is better to have a crawl space that is tailored to the outside temperature, your needs, and the season. For example, it is much better to have a vented space when it’s very hot outside and your AC bills are sky-high. Conversely, when the temperature drops and humidity rises, it is almost always better to have your vents shut and covered if possible.

The most cost-effective foundation repair is using masonry patches and sealants to seal foundation cracks and offer some support to prevent further damage. These methods are used to fix minor foundation cracks quickly. However, they’re not suitable as a long-term solution, and they only offer minimal stability. On average, masonry patches and sealants cost $500, but a sealant like an epoxy crack injection can total over $2,000. If you’re handy and only looking for a temporary solution until you contact a local foundation repair contractor for a more permanent one, you can save hundreds by DIYing this repair.
