"After calling StructuralMD and confirming that this service was what we needed, an appointment was quickly set up and George (Chief Engineer) showed up on time. He closely inspected the area in question and provided a great deal of detail regarding his findings. George answered every question we had and spent whatever time required to provide additional guidance, suggestions and tips. His inspection confirmed that there were no structural issues, and helped us prepare to hire a contractor to complete the (non-structural) work that we originally sought. He also urged us to contact him again to ask any other questions that might have. A professional outfit with excellent customer service!"

"Don't let Contractors take advantage of you, and hire an independent professional engineer. We did have several cracks around the house including the foundations walls, interior walls and ceilings. We hired many contractors for estimates for the repairs, we did have huge difference in quoted starting from $7K to $35K, then we hired an independent engineer to do a full structural assessment. We hired Kiro Engineering to do the structural assessment. They have three options for the assessment. We chose the highest option with a full assessment and structural integrity for the entire house. The report was very detailed with photos, observations, and recommendations. We like the way it was organized. The report was simple to read and understand for a "layman" who is not a professional contractor. This report gave us the right cost estimate. We almost saved $25K."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

When comparing structural engineering quotes in Princeton, be wary of unclear project scopes, missing site-specific details, or generic references that overlook Princeton’s soil and floodplain challenges. If a quote omits a structural inspection or engineering report, that’s a concern. Unusually low bids may indicate skipped steps, like not addressing historic district rules or local drainage issues. Always ask for recent local project references and clarification on all deliverables.

Helpful?

Princeton’s climate, with its freeze-thaw cycles and heavy rainfall, requires structural engineers to design deeper foundations and robust drainage systems. High humidity and snow loads also influence material choices and roof design. Properties near water sources like Carnegie Lake may need enhanced flood protection. Local weather patterns can affect construction timelines, so planning for seasonal impacts is essential for successful structural projects.

Helpful?

In Princeton, address structural engineering issues immediately if you notice cracks in load-bearing walls, significant settlement, or water intrusion, as these can compromise safety. If a structural inspection reveals urgent concerns, act promptly. For less critical needs, such as minor repairs or preventative upgrades, consider scheduling during drier months and coordinating with routine home maintenance or budget planning.

Helpful?

After completing a structural engineering project in Princeton, retain stamped structural drawings, engineering reports, and all inspection records. Keep as-built plans, soil and material test results, and documentation of any structural inspections. If your home is in a historic district, save approval letters. Maintenance schedules, waterproofing warranties, and compliance documents are also important for future renovations, insurance claims, or property sales.

Helpful?

In Princeton, hidden costs often arise from requirements like soil testing, structural inspections, or engineering reports for older homes. Additional expenses can include tree removal permits, asbestos or lead assessments, and compliance with stormwater management rules. If your property is in a historic district, extra documentation or review fees may apply. Unexpected foundation adjustments or waterproofing needs can also increase the project scope.
