Customers say: Quick response

"Cynthia did an amazing job repairing several pieces of wood furniture and a leather chair. My dressers had several water ring marks, and a chunk of wood was missing from a wood cabinet. I cannot tell where the repairs were done because the work she did blends perfectly. My leather recliner needed an area refurbished because the color was removed by bleach. Again, a perfect match! I wish I took before and after pictures for you to see. I would definitely recommend The Wood and Leather Doctor, and I would call them again. I took a leap of faith with previous reviews and am very satisfied with the results. Not to mention how convenient that they did the work on site and I did not have to haul my furniture to them! Very professional work ethic as well."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

If your couch is damaged, you are not out of options. You might try fixing it on your own, bring in a furniture repair specialist, or opt to get rid of it responsibly. Depending on its condition, you could donate, sell, recycle, or drop it off at a local scrap facility.

Regular vacuuming, spot cleaning, and protecting surfaces from sun exposure prevents wear and fading, preserving longevity.

When deciding whether to repair, reupholster, or replace old furniture, consider its age, quality, level of wear, and overall value, including sentimental attachment. In many cases, it is more affordable to reupholster or repair furniture than to replace it, especially for antique, vintage, or discontinued pieces.

Older furniture is often made from durable hardwoods like oak and maple, giving it a longer lifespan than newer furniture, which frequently uses lower-quality materials such as plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Because of this, repairing or reupholstering a well-made older piece is often a worthwhile investment.

To determine the best course of action from a financial perspective, compare quotes from local furniture repair services with the price of a new, similar piece. Reupholstery may not be cost-effective for furniture that was originally inexpensive (e.g., under $300). For high-quality or sentimental items, however, it is an excellent way to preserve the piece and extend its life. If you're unsure, a furniture reupholstery specialist can help you evaluate the piece and make an informed decision.

The time required to reupholster furniture depends on the item's size, complexity, and condition. The hands-on work can range from 2-3 hours for a simple dining chair to 10 to 20 hours for a large sofa. The total project timeline with a professional, including fabric sourcing and scheduling, typically ranges from one to three weeks.

Several factors can affect the timeline. Antique furniture often takes longer due to the delicate care required. If additional repairs are needed, such as sanding or refinishing wood components, the process will also take more time. A DIY reupholstery project will usually take significantly longer than a professional job.

Depending on the quality of the leather, this type of upholstery can last anywhere from 5 to 20 years. The more time you invest in the care and protection of the leather, the longer your leather furniture is likely to last.
