"I can only say great things about JA Drywall. We had quite a complicated chimney repair. From the beginning of the process, this company stood out from all the others. Most companies did not return my calls. One did respond but never showed up to start work. The JA Drywall owner came to our initial appointment on time, evaluated the job and gave us a reasonable and fair estimate. The work crew then came on time and worked really hard for two days to repair the chimney. At each stage they kept us informed of progress. They did a wonderful job, kept the site clean and tidied up once job completed. On top of their excellent work, they are a team of friendly and courteous workers, who also took care of a few other things that needed attention. I would recommend this company to all who are looking for quality work by a friendly team at a reasonable price."

"J. McHandy Services was a delight to work with! Extremely personable, professional, and great work! We had a tricky project to repair a carport roof and install a railing on top of it (making a "roof deck" of sorts). John listened to what we needed, provided welcome suggestions, and was very honest. We reached a middle ground of what we needed and what John knew needed to be done. The project was completed in a timely manner and we couldn't be happier! I would recommend John to anyone!"

"Courteous and timely. Although the Bilco door I had order was not exactly what was needed, Besmir and Berim were able to accommodate the door. Both came and finished the job as arranged. I am pleased with the outcome. I will be contacting them for a future endeavor."

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

Yes, windows being painted shut is a fire hazard. Because windows painted shut may have locks that stick or cannot be opened easily in an emergency, this becomes an immediate fire hazard that should be dealt with.

A home fire sprinkler system reduces heat, flames, and smoke within seconds. Fire sprinkler systems hide in walls with sprinkler heads running along the piping throughout your home.

When the air surrounding a sprinkler reaches a specific temperature, the heads closest to the fire activate and release anywhere from 10 to 25 gallons of water per minute.

Your smoke detector might be too high in some homes or circumstances to reach yourself. If you feel unsafe getting on a ladder to replace your hardwired smoke detector, call a licensed electrician or local handyman to knock this project off your to-do list. If you have a battery-operated smoke detector, your local fire department can change the batteries or help you replace the detector—just make sure you call the non-emergency number.

In any case, do not let this project go unresolved, as it could turn into a huge safety issue.

Yes, dead palm tree fronds are a fire hazard. The leaves become highly combustible because the dead fronds don’t fall off the tree themselves, especially in hot, sunny climates. In fact, many wildfires start from dead palm fronds. Palm trees can also easily catch fire from lighting, electrical power lines, and fireworks. So, cutting off dead palm fronds before they become a fire hazard is important.

Yes, a chimney damper is necessary. It controls airflow in and out of your fireplace, helping to retain heat when closed and allowing smoke to escape when open. Without a damper, your home could lose warmth during cold months, leading to higher energy bills. It also helps prevent downdrafts and keeps animals or debris from entering the chimney. In short, it’s essential for efficiency and safety.
