"Used ALB construction to repair my sidewalk. They contacted me immediately and came the next day to give me an estimate. When I hired them, they gave me a day that they would show up, and they did! The work was done well. The crew was really polite and professional. The sidewalk looks great. All in all, it was a joy to work with this company."

"Eric came to give an estimate for a few small projects related to our deck and fence. After starting the work replacing a few boards, he discovered how bad our deck was (we knew it was very old but didn’t realize how bad it was until the boards were taken up). He gave an estimate to redo the boards and add beams underneath to bring the deck up to code, in addition to the smaller jobs we had requested. He did excellent work, was very professional, and the price he gave us was very reasonable. I absolutely recommend him."

"I had a great experience with Black Rock Exteriors, LLC. They were professional, honest, and really took the time to make sure the job was done right. The quality of the work was excellent, and they treated my home with care as if it were their own. It’s hard to find reliable contractors, but I’d definitely recommend them to anyone needing roofing or masonry work. They repaired my asphalt shingle roof, and it looks fantastic."

"Jimmy's team did a great job of grinding down the mortar on the exterior stone front of our house, and replacing it. While the cost was pretty high, the quality of the work was excellent."

"Mike was great. I got two spots in my backyard that I wanted patio pavers, around one side of the pool and underneath my second floor deck. By the pool was approx. 250sqft with a walkway and below the deck 256sqft as well. Along with 3ft x 15ft concrete patch. I needed this project competed before the weekend and him and his crew was able to get the job in three days. Both patios look great and my wife can finally see my vision and she loves it as well."

"Mark provided a detailed estimate and (unlike other contractors who provided bids) really gave me a feeling like he takes very seriously the customer experience. The other bidders seemed to treat me like I was an experienced contractor who understands all the steps, components and potential variations we might encounter. Mark provided a more realistic picture and recognized I am the homeowner who ultimately needed guidance and assurance through this process (which is a major investment, and can be downright intimidating and scary). My property was challenged by the presence of trees and subsurface rock, including bedrock. When he encountered heavy bedrock Mark was very proactive in addressing this issue by obtaining my permission and disclosing potential cost implications of bringing in extra heavy duty equipment to address the bedrock problem He effectively worked through it and was able to finish the job despite this challenge. Mark (and his son/partner Alan) were outstanding partners and made the overall experience most rewarding. I would not hesitate to wholeheartedly recommend Hendrickson Excavating to friends and neighbor's. Great job, Mark!!! Thank you!!!

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Prompt masonry work provides immediate protection against water damage and heat loss during harsh winters. Repairing gaps stops moisture infiltration before the next freeze-thaw cycle hits. Over the long term, maintaining your brick and stone preserves the structural integrity of your foundation in clay-heavy NJ soils. Proper upkeep also protects your property value and prevents expensive cascading wood rot issues inside your home.

Helpful?

Build your inspection routine around the local climate. Inspect in March or April to catch winter freeze-thaw damage like cracked mortar. Check caulking and weep holes in June before summer storms hit. Schedule another look in September to finish masonry work before temperatures drop below 40 degrees. Finally, check foundation walls in late November before the ground freezes in Flemington.

Helpful?

Start by dry brushing white mineral deposits off your brick surfaces. You must also clear debris from weep holes using a non-metallic tool to prevent water backup. Carefully cut ivy at the base and let it dry completely before removing it to protect the mortar. Always document and date foundation cracks with a pencil to track seasonal changes before scheduling professional masonry work in Flemington.

Helpful?

Using the correct mortar is the most critical factor for historic homes. Modern cement will destroy original soft brick. You must also schedule masonry work between mid-April and mid-November, as mortar requires temperatures above 40 degrees to cure properly. Finally, ensure the soil grading around your Flemington home directs water away from the foundation to prevent premature deterioration from pooling water.

Helpful?

You have several sustainable options for masonry work. Choose reclaimed fieldstone or brick to reduce environmental impact while matching the historic Flemington aesthetic. For older homes, use natural hydraulic lime mortar, which offers a lower carbon footprint. You should also consider thermal mass designs to reduce heating loads during cold NJ winters. Finally, install permeable pavers for driveways to manage local stormwater runoff effectively.
