"Eric refinished our garage door and back porch steps which were in rough shape. He also painted the trim and shutters. It was a big job and required a lot of sanding, scraping and putty work. We are very happy with his work. He takes his time, does careful prep and paints neatly. No slops on the windows. The garage door and steps look like new. We will use him again. He is honest and trustworthy. A week later we asked him to come back and refinish our 60-year-old knotty pine kitchen cabinets. He did a fantastic job on him and they look like new now"

"I used DJ Painters not only once but twice because they did such a great job our first time working with them. The first job, they painted the outside of our home, and we later hired them to paint the inside. Eduardo and Alvaro responded to me quickly whenever I needed to get a hold of them, the work was done quickly, cleanly, and professionally, and their prices are reasonable. They clean up after themselves and can be trusted to be in your home and lock up when we weren't home. Alvaro provided pictures of the work in progress when we were out of town, and it was all these small touches that makes us highly recommend DJ Painting for all your painting needs!! They even removed all the window treatments and re-installed them when the work was complete. Excellent company with friendly, professional workers!"

Small jobs welcome

"John and his crew were absolutely great! They finished ahead of schedule and on budget. We are selling our home and they were able to do a variety of different jobs from staining our deck to 40' high vaulted ceilings.. but most of all they really respected our space.. I will definitely be working with them again in our new home! Thank you John."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

The best exterior paint for the job of painting your front porch depends on the material you’ll be painting. Acrylic paint is often recommended for a wooden porch as it’s durable and easy to apply. If your porch is made of concrete, you’ll need to find a formula suited to that material.

Beyond liquid rubber, homeowners can use sealants, stains, membranes, or tapes as waterproofing options. Oil-based or water-based sealants soak into the wood, creating a moisture-resistant barrier. Waterproofing stains—available in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid colors—add both protection and style to your deck. For heavy-duty waterproofing, deck membranes and waterproof tapes can be applied under the deck boards to direct water away from the structure below. Whatever method you choose, clean and prep the deck first to ensure the best, longest-lasting results.

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

Unless you’re using a 2-in-1 formula or painting over an existing coat of paint, it pays to apply a coat of primer ahead of your new paint. Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. The primer promotes better paint adhesion, moisture repellency, and a smoother finish, which means you’ll often need fewer coats of paint.

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.
