"Best Choice General Constructions provided an excellent experience from start to finish. They were extremely responsive to all of our questions throughout the process. The new deck was expertly built, delivered with quality materials, and completed within a week. The crew showed up every day, worked late to stay on schedule, and exceeded all of our expectations. We absolutely love how the deck turned out and would highly recommend Best Choice General Constructions to anyone looking for top-quality work. "We originally reached out to Home Techs to do repairs resulting from a flood. Joe got back to us right away and came out to view the damage within a few days. We expanded the original job to include replacing the floors throughout the downstairs, putting in a new bathroom, installing a new water heater, rebuilding a closet, fixing our heater/circuit board and replacing the thermostats. Joe kept us updated throughout the process. He was respectful and kind and did everything he could to keep us within our budget. We then hired him to do the roof. Thereâ s nothing he and his team canâ t do. It was a great experience and we heartily recommend Home Techs for all your home needs."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

Many people say the best composite decking is Trex, TimberTech, or Fiberon. These brands have formulated composite deck boards to withstand the elements and hold up over time. Each offers a range of product lines varying in durability, price, and appearance. Compare their different composite decking offers for cost, looks, and features before deciding on a product.

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.

The least expensive way to build a pool deck is with concrete deck blocks, pressure-treated lumber, and the appropriate hardware for hanging joists and securing deck boards. With these basic yet durable deck materials, you'll have a pool deck that's built to last without the high price tag. You should also stain or seal the deck to protect it against the elements.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.
