Small jobs welcome

"The work was awesome, they were on time and worked every day. They cleaned up after their day was complete and were extremely easy to work with through the process. Their workmanship is top notch. I will be using them again to build a barn and eventually to build an addition off the back of my house."

"Greg and his team did an amazing job on our screened-in porch. He contacted me, came out to see the job and started/completed the work in a little over a week. He was quick and efficient, replacing the wood framing, adding capping, new screens, a fresh coat of paint and more. It looks brand new!! As much as he was proficient, detailed oriented and professional in his workmanship. He was friendly, down to earth and an honest businessman. As a customer, I valued Greg communicating his plan, progress, updates, and findings daily. These days it is hard to find a business with all these important qualities and still be able to give you a reasonable price for the workmanship being done. You won't regret contacting and hiring Greg for your construction needs."

"I hired Aztec for major repairs due to termite damage. They were prompt, professional, and easy to work with. They came in less than 10 days after we contacted them to FINISH the work. First, they evaluated the damage and walked me through the needed repairs which included placing three new steel support beams along with two main horizontal wood beams and several sistered beams. They were able to complete the work, once they started, in three days. At each step, I was informed of progress and there were no surprises (from my end). The work included everything from removing electrical wiring and then replacing it, pouring the new steel vertical support beams, affixing them solidly into my concrete floor, and then pacing the numerous horizontal beams. I could not recommend AZtec (and Greg!) more."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Framing with metal studs can be significantly faster than using wooden studs, provided you have some experience working with the material. While you can use virtually instant pneumatic nailers with wood, metal requires installing screws. However, because metal is lighter, straighter, usually comes cut-to-length, and doesn't require sorting for the best pieces, you can save significant time using metal instead of wood.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.
