"Mark Michaels/Great Design, Inc was our first experience working with an architect and the entire process could not have gone better. Mark listened to our ideas and concerns, asked detailed questions and gave thoughtful, creative suggestions and advice about the project - all before we had even signed our contract with him. He then carefully examined and measured the property and kept us updated as the plans took form. The end result is a set of top-notch, professional plans which are currently providing the basis for an amazing renovation."

"John is great to work with. Very responsive and professional. We're still working with him for our renovation we had to delay by a year due to timing issues. He's reassured us that he will continue to work with us on whatever we need when getting permits. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for an architect. He listens to what you want and also offers great ideas and alternatives."

"We highly recommend Foundation Experts.  We had a water problem in our attached garage-wet floor after storms-and in our basement-wet walls and cracks in the walls and floor of our 40 year old home. We had had a builder we trusted address the problem with the garage but the French drain he put in outside the garage was not effective.  Of the three estimates we obtained from "water-proofing" companies, only Foundation Experts addressed both the basement and the garage issues!  The others had no clue about the garage and only wanted to focus on the basement and the others were not as comprehensive regarding what they believed to be the problem in the basement and what they planned to do. Foundation Experts took a more comprehensive approach to diagnosing and fixing the problems- not just "water-proofing" but water management.  Nick Jones and his partner correctly assessed what was causing the problems and how to fix them and did more than they had originally proposed without an increase in price when they more fully assessed what the problems were, including correcting with good results the fix the contractor had tried for the garage. Their goal was always to do what was required to fix the problems. Nick Jones oversaw the work every day, was easy to work with and resolved any concerns  questions we had appropriately and effectively to our satisfaction.  The foreman on the job, Andy, made sure the work was done correctly, neatly and cleanly to the point of protecting the newly painted walls in the hallway of our house so they would not be damaged or scratched when workers passed through on the way in and out of the basement. The workers who installed the French drains in the basement and garage were clearly experienced and expert at what they did.  The company provided plastic containers to protect and remove articles that were in the basement and even rented a truck to temporarily store the things from the garage when the work was being done in the garage. In the end, not only were the basement and garage finally dry, but both were more attractive.  In the garage, as part of the work without extra cost, they removed dry wall and insulation that were mildewed and replaced them and wiped everything down with an anti-mildew formula before installing the French drains in the garage, got whatever permits were required to do the work and contracted an electrician to install an electrical outlet and electric line for the newly installed sump pump in the garage.  For a fair-priced additional fee, in the garage, they also put up dry wall where there had been none, painted all the walls and ceiling and painted the garage floor with a special paint that we requested. Andy made sure to fix up anything that had been missed.  In short, from beginning to end, thay did an excellent job, did more than we expected, were timely, professional and knew what they were doing.  Not only that, but as part of their service, after a recent rain storm, Andy returned to check the sump pumps they had installed to make sure the system was working and they will return again in December for another check or sooner, if needed.   We are glad to have had them do the work we needed and recommend them highly without reservation.  In fact, we are now going to have them address a chronic water problem in our backyard.

Architects questions, answered by experts

While Craftsman-style houses are bungalows, cottages typically aren’t, though they can be. But they also differ in other stylistic aspects. For instance, cottages usually have simpler designs and painted woodwork.

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

With proper training and experience, reading blueprints is fairly straightforward and not very difficult. If you don’t have the necessary knowledge to interpret the symbols, abbreviations, and other notations used, blueprints may not make sense. Learning to read blueprints can help you understand the construction process and keep you more involved and informed when you’re building a house.

Architects bring expertise in spatial design, efficiency, aesthetics, and safety, translating complex needs into feasible, regulatory-compliant design plans.

The most common scale for residential blueprints is 1/4 of an inch equals one foot. This scale is the most popular because it’s easier for everyone involved, from professionals to homeowners, to understand the building’s actual dimensions. Also, it allows blueprints to have the necessary details without cluttering the page.
