"In a word, D&S does spectacular perfect work. Don and Isaac and their crews are the definition of professionals and experts in their craft of design and execution of hardscape, and good people. We did a complete renovation of our house which entailed 1. the removal of 13 mature trees and visibly gnarly roots; design and installation of: 2 an 800SF patio (after excavating a giant concrete slab), 3. Three walkways, and 4. Drainage, 5. A new paver driveway, 6. A new and expanded front landing, 7. New flower box, 8. Garage drainage and concrete floor enhancement and 9. Lighting. The results are stunning and have enhanced the beauty and functionality of our home into a serene and solid oasis. D&S did a perfect job, on time, for exactly the prices quoted. Further, the individual attention Don in particular paid to me and my family to help us with design and decisions and budget was most appreciated. I give D&S my highest recommendation. Hire them! You'll be completely satisfied and happy!"

"They installed a patio in my backyard with Cambridge pavers which turned out absolutely beautiful. The design and pattern is just outstanding. They also put a belgium block border on both sides of my driveway on a 35 degree angle which added the final touch to the Cambridge paver driveway that Classical pavers did a few years ago. The crew that did this project and my driveway are very professional and polite. I have recommended Classical Pavers to many family and friends. The owner is very honest and a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. They are the best around without a doubt."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

Asphalt, which is stone mixed with tar, is the most common material for outdoor basketball courts because it’s so sturdy and versatile. However, you don't have to use it: another option is polymeric rubber, which has shock pads that can prevent injury. This option is a little more expensive, ranging between $16 and $25 per square foot.

Materials used for indoor basketball courts, such as hardwoods, aren’t really an option outdoors.

An asphalt overlay or top coat costs between $3 and $7 per square foot. For a standard, single-car driveway that’s 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, that’s a total of between $600 and $1,400. For a two-car driveway, you’re looking at a total of between $1,200 and $3,000.

New asphalt goes through two stages: drying and curing. Drying typically takes 24 to 72 hours, after which the surface is solid enough for light use like walking or careful driving. While you may be able to park on it after 72 hours, the surface is still soft and should be treated gently. Full curing is a much longer process, taking anywhere from 30 days to a full year for the asphalt to reach maximum strength. During this extended curing period, the asphalt is susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and high temperatures. Factors like weather, the specific asphalt mix, and application thickness all influence drying and curing times. For the most accurate timeline and to ensure the longevity of your new asphalt, it is always best to consult with your installation contractor for their specific recommendations.

Asphalt is not a type of concrete. While both are a common type of pavement, asphalt is composed of aggregates (like sand and gravel) and bitumen; concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregates, and water. Here are some of the key differences between asphalt and concrete driveways.
