"Kevin was great, he was very responsive on a Saturday and came to hang a new door for me the next day. The installation was more complicated than I originally anticipated. The hinges, deadbolt and door knob did not align with the existing cut outs. Kevin did a great job making the door look like it was pre-hung on the existing frame."

"I recently hired Devin to reside my house and replace the front door, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From start to finish, Devin was professional, reliable, and easy to work with. He clearly takes pride in his work—the attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the project. When replacing the front door, Devin discovered rot beneath the old frame. He took the time to properly address and repair all the issues around the door before installing the new one, and did an excellent job making sure everything was solid and well-sealed. The final result looks great and feels very secure. The new siding also came out fantastic and really improved the look of my home. Devin was flexible throughout the project and accommodating with any changes, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. If you’re looking for a contractor who does quality work and genuinely cares about the finished product, I highly recommend Devin."

Small jobs welcome

"This Is the third time Mike and Justin did work for me. First they replaced sheet rock that was damaged due to a serious roof leak and painted the ceilings. They returned and installed a new patio slider, replaced exterior skirting and painted the exterior. They just finished replacing a kitchen wall, subflooring and new floor tiles. and painting the kitchen. The place looks so great, the wife and I are rethinking selling. I highly recommend Cats Meow Carpentry."

"We hired 603 Construction during Covid to build an addition on our home, and the result completely transformed how we live in the space, especially our kitchen, which has become the heart of our home and an incredible gathering place for family and friends. Like any major project (especially during Covid), there were challenges along the way, but Mike and team handled them and delivered a final product that has created lasting memories for my family and friends. Great group of guys that work hard to deliver! Highly recommend!!"

"Keith and his crew came out and did a wonderful job, the lawn guy damaged the vinyl siding skirting on both sides of my mud room and the two columns, and Keith and his crew repaired the damage and did a great job. I would certainly be using them again and also recommend them. Thanks Scott K."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.
