"Lighthouse Painting just finished painting our home. The crew did a wonderful job, making sure each phase was done completely before moving on. We changed colors and after the two coats of stain, there are none of the old colors to be seen. Highly recommend them to others. The crew was easy to work with and put in full days on the job."

"Jordan Martinez came over promptly. We discussed what areas in the kitchen and dining room that were to be painted. Jordan contacted another painter named, Angel to see if he would be available to do the painting job the next morning. Angel, who is a very polite, and a hard working young man, agreed to do the job which was done on Saturday and Sunday. Both the kitchen and the dining room areas were painted with two coats of paint. Two coats on the ceiling, two coats on the walls, and the trim. We are very happy with the end result. We would highly recommend Jordan Martinez/ Putnam Coastal Painting, and Angel who did the painting job. Sincerely, Al and Liz"

"True north installed decorative window trim on my colonial home. Costas showed up to quote as soon as I called and had the work going within days. The design on the window trim was intricate with dentil, flashings, and arch window moldings. It truly look amazing! Also the price was very reasonable and very fair."

Customers say: Quality work

"There are a lot of great things to say about Bill. First of all, he can do ANYTHING. Bill replaced siding, installed new plywood and Tyvec, painted my house and deck, built a new front porch, repaired and built new features on my back deck, eliminated rot, installed new gutters, re-insulated my basement, and even fixed a closet door in my house. He is a perfectionist and will treat your house like it is his own. Our house was in really rough shape before Bill came and now it looks stunning. We get compliments on it all the time. If you want someone that will do the job right, won't cut corners, and is a very nice person to work with - Bill is your guy."

"My project has just started. So far, I'm extremely impressed. The owner came out to give me an estimate, and discuss what I wanted for my home exterior staining. Very professional, courteous, and honest. The first stage of washing my home to prepare for staining was also impressive. The foreman who is overseeing the project arrived, and again reviewed everything that will take place. The crew then cleaned my home in only 2 hours! Again very impressive. Prior to leaving, they neatly stacked all the ladders that they used completely out of the way, which is even more important to me because I have a large dog on a run who loves to get into trouble with new objects in the yard. So far, I'm extremely happy with Northern Ridge and highly recommend them."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Avoid using cleaning products that are abrasive or contain bleach or acidic components on composite decking to avoid discoloration. Early-generation Trex decking isn’t designed to handle pressure washer cleaning—and if you use them on second-generation boards, always use a low setting to avoid the risk of damage that can risk voiding your warranty.

You’ll need to restrain your deck when you notice fading, cracking, peeling, or mold and mildew over a moderate to large area, or when it’s become especially difficult to clean. As for how often to stain a deck, plan to do it every two to three years or whenever you start to notice extended damage.

You should seal your deck every one to two years, but you’ll also need to clean and repair your wood deck throughout the seasons. You may want to hire a local house cleaning service to sweep and clean the deck thoroughly. These cleaning services cost around $50 per hour.

Inspect your deck at least once a year, and if you notice any damage or rot, expect to spend about $10 to $50 for simple DIY fixes or about $2,000 for professional repairs on more extensive damage.

Eggshell and satin finishes are best for porches because they sit in the sweet spot between scuffable matte and distracting high gloss. Your porch sees a fair amount of wear and tear, so you don’t want paint that’ll show every mark like matte, but you don’t want to be blinded by glossy paint in the sun either. Eggshell and satin have durability and a look that sits nicely in the middle.

It is not always necessary to remove old stain before restaining a deck. If the previous stain is in good condition and is compatible with the new stain, you may be able to apply a new coat after thorough cleaning. However, if the old stain is in bad condition, flaking, or peeling, it is best to remove it completely to ensure an even surface and proper adhesion for the new coat. Staining over a damaged layer can lead to an uneven finish and poor penetration. For best results, test a small area first and consult the stain manufacturer's guidelines.
