"Lenny and Nick are great to work with! We are finishing our basement and they just completed the bathroom to start and it came out fantastic! They have excellent contacts to help with the plumbing and electricity and made the whole process easy for us. We can't wait to keep working with them and completing our basement."

"Adam did an excellent job building our garage from the ground up. He was excellent to work with. Not only was he very professional, so were the subcontractors that he hired. Everyone was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Our project required that a road be built to accommodate large trucks in the springtime. The project stayed on track and proceeded smoothly. We were never left wondering “what’s next?” Adam has great communication and stayed in touch to make sure we knew what was coming up and when. I would definitely recommend using Magic Frog Carpentry."

"This was my first time hiring a contractor and I admit it was quite daunting. After meeting with two other contractors and "testing" Dallastra, I felt they were up to the task. Not only that, I was on vacation in Italy while the work was done! Dallastra held to the promise of keeping me updated the whole time. When I returned home I was, and still am, happy with the results. (Dallastra also refinished my wood floors, painted the ceilings on the main floor as well as a couple of other small areas.)"

"We found Beau on Angi, met him to describe the project; turn a 2nd floor small bedroom into a full bath and to remodel a small 1st floor full bath into a half bath. We talked it through and he gave us an estimate. A couple weeks later we met with Beau again and decided to expand the project. He was very confident and flexible. We added two dormers on the front of the house, moving a wall that spanned the upstairs from side to side, enlarging an already big bedroom, and to build a wall in the large bedroom creating two smaller sized bedrooms. Beau went right along with us asking questions and pointing out details we would need to know. He was enthusiastic and excited about the project. We are super happy with the results. He had given us a reasonable estimate and cost came in as expected. He kept in very close touch with us and was always happy to answer any questions. Beau's personality is great-filled with humor, wit, and wisdom. We have rehired him to build a lakeside deck."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

If you don’t have a crawl space but have a partial basement you want to make deeper, you can expect to spend a little less—between $40,000 and $90,000 on average. However, if you’re not adding new finished square footage, you won’t see much in the way of ROI.

Walkout basements are not generally included in a home’s square footage, although they may be if they meet certain conditions that depend on local regulations. A finished walkout basement used as a living space may be counted toward square footage in some locations as long as all codes for livable space are met.

Basements are commonly converted into game rooms. The potential challenges you may run into include controlling moisture, working with low ceilings, limited natural light, and the need for additional electrical or HVAC work. Addressing these issues can add to the total cost, but it ensures a comfortable and functional space.
