Small jobs welcome

"Herbito and his assistant Jose came over and took down a large portion of my basement ceiling drywall so I could have an inspection done and do some repairs. They were on-time, worked efficiently, and did a fine job for a very fair price. I can't judge their finish work because they didn't do that for me. But if it's anything like what they did in taking the ceiling down, I don't think you can go wrong. I plan to bring them back for that and if possible, will update this review."

Small jobs welcome

"I couldn’t be happier with the drywall work that was completed. The craftsmanship was exceptional from the smooth finishes, clean seams, and great attention to detail throughout the repair. The work was completed on time, the drywall guy kept it clean, and communication was excellent from start to finish. It’s clear that this drywaller takes pride in their work and strives for perfection. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for high-quality drywall installation or repairs."

"Absolute Finishing was professional. They removed an old stove top and an oven built into the cupboards and left space for a new range. They were always friendly with explanations and went beyond expectations when unexpected problems with the project came up. I recommend them highly."

"Atrix construction did a wonderful job on my bathroom and basement remodel project. The job included putting new drywall, taping, muddying, and painting the new walls in my basement. They finished the project by putting down a new floor that we picked out. Emmanuel the owner of the company was very knowledgeable and understanding to our needs. I will certainly be using them again on any future projects and highly recommend them to any of our friends. They were very professional and I thank them for their excellent work. Sincerely, David Bates"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

It's generally recommended to hang drywall on the ceiling first before moving on to the walls. This sequence allows the ceiling sheets to provide support for the vertical wall sheets. By attaching the ceiling drywall initially, you establish a solid framework to align and attach the wall panels accurately. This method ensures a seamless and sturdy connection between the ceiling and walls, resulting in a more professional finish.

If you already have plaster walls and ceilings, adding new plaster costs $2 to $10 per square foot. For an average-sized room, that would come out to $1,200 to $10,000. However, the cost to replace plaster with drywall is higher—running between $720 and $1,250 for a 10-by-8-foot wall or ceiling (not including drywall finishing).

Look for flaking paint or air bubbles that burst and then flake away. Paint will begin to flake after being exposed to minimal moisture or water, so it’s a good indicator of any water damage. If you notice your paint starting to flake, feel the plaster underneath to see if it is soft or damp.

Certain drywall textures, like sand and sometimes popcorn, can be smoothed by applying skim coats, sanding the walls, or chipping away the texture. However, it’s worth considering removing the texture and starting with a blank canvas. Smoothing textured walls requires a lot of sandpaper and elbow grease and can take longer than just outright removing the texture.
