"Excellent attention to detail and communication during project which included excavation alongside exterior wall to remove and replace moisture barrier and stripping interior basement walls and reapplying primer and Drylock. The project also required disassembly and reassembly of wine racks and work benches. Dirk would not quit until he was satisfied that it met his high standard. Extremely pleased and I would not hesitate to hire again. Project came in on budget and clean up was thorough."

"After reaching out to a couple of referrals from HomeAdvisor, Alex promptly contacted me and arranged to do a site inspection. He handled all of the arrangements to have the tank pumped, and was on site for the tank removal and replacement of the soil by the backhoe operator. After completion, he wrote a thorough summary report complete with photos of the project. Everything was done in a timely and professional manner. It was great to have professional advice and guidance start to finish. I can highly recommend CSM Environmental."

"Excellent background which made me comfortable that I was dealing with a professional company. Scheduled ahead, arrived on time, quietly did his investigation, and called to discuss results. We agreed to send away for soil analysis for additional $100. No money upfront. Sent invoice via email which was remitted via check which made easier for me to pay. The property now has a certified letter that will serve well for future sale."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The time it takes to build a pool—and dig out the area—varies based on the pool size and type. A professional excavator will take between four and eight hours to dig a pool. The process will take longer if they encounter large boulders or tree roots. Keep in mind that this is a small part of the process in the long run. You will need between eight and 12 weeks to build a pool from start to finish, including the time to apply for permits.

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.

Yes, you can install a trench drain if you already have concrete in your yard or garden. While it can complicate some aspects of the job and slightly run up the cost, it is doable. Residential trench drains can be easily retrofitted to outdoor areas with concrete without having to remove excessive amounts of your patio, pool area, or decorative walkways.

Hardscaping often requires preparation of the ground in the area where the feature is being installed. This can include digging, compacting, and leveling the soil, ensuring adequate drainage, and removing any existing plants. The extent of preparation needed will depend on the type and size of the hardscaping feature being installed.

A joint utility trench, or joint trench, is a long, buried ditch on a property that contains two or more utility lines rather than running the lines in multiple trenches. Some utilities, like gas and electric or electric and communication lines, are better suited to joint trenching, while others, like water and sewer, are not allowed to be in the same trench.
