Small jobs welcome

Offers commercial services

I am a licensed Professional Engineer providing structural engineering services for residential and small commercial projects. I work with homeowners, contractors, and design professionals to help move projects through the permit process by providing structural calculations, drawings, evaluations, and engineering letters as needed.\n\nIn-person structural inspections are available in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Remote structural consulting is available in Delaware and North Carolina.\n\nTypical projects include load-bearing wall removal, beam and header sizing, additions, decks, foundation concerns, and framing evaluations. My goal is to provide practical, code-compliant structural solutions that are clear, efficient, and tailored to the project.

"

Very well.  I feel so comfortable about the stability of my home.  Jim, the owner of the company, was always looking for the best and most reasonable way to solve a problem.  His crew was hard working and came to work when they said they would (except for the rainy periods of course).  The house was empty so they stayed at my home (so they could be close to the job) and kept very good care of it.

It was an expensive repair but I believe I could not have found a better crew for the same price. Since I was out of state much of the time, they kept me informed at every step, which is helpful when you can not be there.
I definitely would recommend them for waterproofing but I was most impressed with their ability to do the structural reinforcement."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

In Spruce Pine, unexpected costs often arise from encountering granite bedrock that requires specialized excavation, groundwater issues from mountain springs, or contaminated soils near historic mining areas. Steep terrain can demand additional retaining walls or drainage solutions, while narrow mountain roads may increase delivery expenses. Unforeseen environmental permits for nearby streams or wetlands can also extend timelines and add to overall project complexity.

Helpful?

In Spruce Pine, early warning signs include hairline cracks in basement walls, doors or windows that stick seasonally, or minor water seepage—issues that can worsen with freeze-thaw cycles and local groundwater. Standing water near foundations, small areas of erosion, or a sagging roofline are also red flags. Addressing these promptly with a local structural expert can help prevent more extensive and costly repairs.

Helpful?

In Spruce Pine, foundation design and installation are especially vulnerable to mistakes because of the steep slopes, variable soil conditions, and past mining activity. Overlooking detailed soil testing or underestimating the need for proper drainage can quickly lead to structural instability. Misjudging snow and wind loads, common in the Blue Ridge area, can also compromise roof integrity, so precise calculations and site-specific planning are essential.

Helpful?

Spruce Pine’s climate brings heavy snowfall, high humidity, and frequent freeze-thaw cycles, all of which influence structural engineering choices. Designs must account for snow loads, moisture barriers, and expansion joints to prevent damage. Construction schedules often need to be flexible, as winter weather can delay concrete curing and material deliveries, making careful weather planning and material selection crucial for successful project completion.

Helpful?

The existing condition of a Spruce Pine property—such as its age, type of foundation, and hillside placement—directly impacts engineering decisions. Older homes may need seismic retrofits or foundation reinforcement, while properties on slopes require careful drainage and retaining wall evaluation. Access limitations, mature trees, and existing wells or septic systems all influence how engineers plan safe, effective structural solutions tailored to the site.
