Small jobs welcome

Offers commercial services

I am a licensed Professional Engineer providing structural engineering services for residential and small commercial projects. I work with homeowners, contractors, and design professionals to help move projects through the permit process by providing structural calculations, drawings, evaluations, and engineering letters as needed.\n\nIn-person structural inspections are available in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Remote structural consulting is available in Delaware and North Carolina.\n\nTypical projects include load-bearing wall removal, beam and header sizing, additions, decks, foundation concerns, and framing evaluations. My goal is to provide practical, code-compliant structural solutions that are clear, efficient, and tailored to the project.

"

Very well.  I feel so comfortable about the stability of my home.  Jim, the owner of the company, was always looking for the best and most reasonable way to solve a problem.  His crew was hard working and came to work when they said they would (except for the rainy periods of course).  The house was empty so they stayed at my home (so they could be close to the job) and kept very good care of it.

It was an expensive repair but I believe I could not have found a better crew for the same price. Since I was out of state much of the time, they kept me informed at every step, which is helpful when you can not be there.
I definitely would recommend them for waterproofing but I was most impressed with their ability to do the structural reinforcement."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Burnsville’s mountain climate, with frequent rainfall, cold winters, and snow, directly affects structural engineering work. Freeze-thaw cycles require specialized concrete mixes and careful curing. High humidity calls for enhanced moisture barriers, while steep terrain and wind exposure mean foundations and bracing must be tailored to local conditions. Scheduling major construction between April and October helps avoid weather-related delays.

Helpful?

In Burnsville, structural engineering project timelines depend on the project type and local conditions. Foundation repairs typically require 2-4 weeks, while a structural inspection can be completed in a few days. Major renovations or new builds may extend from 2 to 6 months. Factors like mountain weather, permit approval, and material delivery can influence schedules, so always allow for some flexibility.

Helpful?

In Burnsville, soil analysis, snow load calculations, and foundation work on sloped lots are particularly sensitive to mistakes. The region’s mountain soils and elevation demand precise drainage planning and accurate assessment of freeze-thaw cycles. Skipping proper compaction or underestimating moisture risks can lead to settling or water intrusion, so attention to detail in these areas is crucial for long-term structural integrity.

Helpful?

For Burnsville homeowners, start spring by inspecting foundations and drainage for freeze-thaw damage. In summer, check for excess humidity and inspect decks or retaining walls. Fall is ideal for sealing foundation cracks and clearing gutters before winter. During winter, monitor for ice dams and snow accumulation on roofs. This targeted routine helps address local climate challenges and maintain your home’s structural health year-round.

Helpful?

In Burnsville, structural engineering projects can impact HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, especially when altering foundations or load-bearing walls. Before starting, review plans for any intersecting utilities, such as ductwork or water lines. Coordinating with local professionals ensures that all systems are properly adjusted and remain accessible, preventing disruptions and ensuring your home’s systems work together efficiently during and after the project.
