Small jobs welcome

"The Matais team ripped out the old insulation, cleaned the space & installed new insulation as well as vapor barrier. Also installed additional blown in insulation in attic. Accomplished all in one day. Good price & hard workers. Very happy with our experience."

"We were out of town when the work was done, but returned to find the house looked great. From the time Ben came to do the estimate until I made final payment I found 360 Painting to be very transparent and professional. We’re well pleased!"

"I would highly recommend Andy and his services. We have been having severe moisture issues in our crawl space. After experiencing issues just getting someone to come out and look at the issue or very high prices, Andy called us right away and was able to schedule an appointment the following day. He was thorough and honest in his assessment of the issues. He went above and beyond what was asked and walked our property to point out other areas of concern and things we can do to help mitigate water issues. When it was time to do the work, he was on time and worked really hard to ensure all the mold in the crawl space was taken care of and replaced damaged installation. He came back with his team to install the dehumidifier as soon as it arrived. Once completed, he reviewed exactly what he did in detail, explained the new unit and left things neat and tidy. His pricing was also the lowest we received and far below what we expected to pay. I will absolutely call him if I need additional work done and would recommend him to anyone. Now I just need to convince him to do electrical and plumbing and he'd be the only person we hire. Thank you Andy!"

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

Choose a drill bit that is the size of the screws of the anchors you will use. You aren’t drilling through metal or concrete—hopefully—so any standard twist, wooden or all-purpose drill bit will work fine. It’s also important to have a screwdriver capable of drilling through the drywall and into the stud. The good news is most available drills, even the older ones, can do this with no issue.

The cost to install drywall is between $1.50 and $3 per square foot, while shiplap installation costs between $2 and $7 on average. In most applications, shiplap installations cost more than that of putting in drywall. However, several ways exist to reduce shiplap prices, especially for small locations or accent walls, which can keep the total cost of shiplap competitive with that of drywall.

Furring strips, thin strips of wood or metal, are not always required for ceiling drywall installation. If the ceiling surface is even and in good condition, drywall can be directly attached to the ceiling joists using screws. However, furring strips become essential when dealing with irregular surfaces or when additional insulation or soundproofing is needed. They create a level substrate for attaching the drywall. Ultimately, the decision to use furring strips depends on the condition of the existing ceiling and the specific requirements of the project.

Drywall can be toxic to the environment and to humans in some cases. As drywall breaks down in a landfill and comes in contact with other organic chemicals, it can create hydrogen sulfide gas or leach into the groundwater. Additionally, the CDC recommends methods for controlling the inhalation of drywall dust when handled. While the common ingredients of drywall—gypsum, silica, and mica—are naturally occurring, they can cause irritation in some humans.
