"Got my A/C unit replaced as the old one was 15 year old. Rhett and Nova from L3 HVAC did a very good job in installing and were very professional. I feel like they gave me a fair price. It has been onlt a day but new A/C seems to be working fine."

We had some questions about some problems under the house. A man came out and explained to me what they could offer to try to solve those problems. They call it the doctor energy specialist or something, I don?t know. It?s about removing moisture and other things from under the house and making sure the ducts are properly attached and that they are insulated properly. That the house insulation is proper and they sealed most of the vents to keep the wet air from coming in. They put in a dehumidifier and all that stuff. They did a large amount of work. They put in a new moisture barrier and corrected some problems that we already paid somebody to do and they didn?t do. They even attached the dryer duct, which wasn?t attached and the air was going out all under the house. They were very very good. They did what they said. They took all the trash and everything they found out from under there. This whole experience has been a nightmare. Those people at GSM were super. The inspection he did not charge us for, but we put an amount down on the work they were going to start doing. It was excellent because he went under the house, he took pictures of all the things he was going to tell me about, and then he explained the different treatments that were available and the prices for those treatments. And what particular things they would correct. It was very clear and he was very good about answering my questions. He seemed very experienced.

"I  had never had the service before in any of the other homes I owned.  I was not sure what to expect and how the cleaning process actually worked.  The two gentleman arrived right on time.  They explained everything to me and how the equipment worked.  After walking through the house, they unloaded the equipment and went right to work.  Whenever I asked a question they it was answered.  Before they left one of the gentleman asked if I had a clean filter for the HVAC unit and offered to put the new one in for me.  I did and he did.   The entire process took about 90 minutes including making sure everything was cleaned up before they left. .  I would definitely used the service again. Very professional, efficient and informative.

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Vents may blow air even though the air conditioning system is off because of the pressure difference between indoor and outdoor air or drafts from leaky ducts. Check for leaks or drafts in the ductwork or around windows and doors.

At a minimum, an HVAC system should be serviced once per year. However, a twice-a-year service schedule—once in the spring for the cooling system and once in the fall for the heating system—is often recommended, especially for older systems, heat pumps, or in climates with extreme temperatures. Regular service, which includes inspection, cleaning, and maintenance, ensures the system runs efficiently, helps prevent costly breakdowns during peak seasons, and can extend the unit's lifespan. You can also schedule a service if you notice issues like poor performance or strange noises.

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.

A 3-ton AC unit is probably too big for a home that’s 1,200 square feet. If you have a 1,200-square-foot home, you likely need a unit that’s somewhere around 1.9 and 2 tons. An AC unit that’s too large will be really inefficient and cost you a lot of extra money on your bills.

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years
