"We are very pleased with our screen porch. Joe told us up front how much the project would cost and how long it would take to complete. The workers did a great job and worked hard to make the vision we had for the porch . It was very helpful that we had other projects in our neighborhood to look at and talk to the homeowners. Overall we are very pleased with the job and the workers."

"The trimming of the Crepe Myrtles was done well.  I thought they were going to be lowering the tops of (2) of the Crepe Myrtle Trees that were closest to my home, but they just trimmed them back from the home which was fine.  The crew was on time, but the gentleman that came out to walk through all the work prior, I do not believe was on site as I received calls from the crew on site asking me about specific trees and what needed to be done.  I was expecting some communication on a full plan for my yard on landscaping that involved planting (trees, flowers, & shrubs), removal and installation of mulch, and removal of brick walls on current planter boxes, but there has never been anything to come of this.  I have not had any communication from the company since the work was completed.
I am not saying the work performed was bad, I was just disappointed in that I gave them an opportunity to earn more of my business and there was no follow through.

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Living in a finished basement is acceptable, but only if the space has the proper points of egress and includes smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to ensure the safety of the occupants. A good way to ensure your finished basement is suitable for use as living space is to get the basement finishing project properly permitted.

Physically, the most challenging part of finishing a basement is installing egress windows or doors when the space is below ground level. Mentally, the hardest part may be envisioning the project and planning around load-bearing and mechanical obstacles.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary

The time it takes to finish or remodel a basement can vary significantly, ranging from a few weeks to several months or even up to a year. On average, the construction phase can take four to eight weeks, but the total project time can extend to three or four months when including planning and permits. The timeline depends on several factors, including the basement's size, design complexity, the scope of the work, and your contractor's availability. A more detailed breakdown for an average-sized basement might include: framing (3-5 days), electrical and rough-in plumbing (3-5 days), drywall installation (5 days), flooring (2-3 days), and final touches like painting and trim (about a week). If preliminary work like installing a waterproofing system or addressing structural issues is needed, the timeline could extend to six to twelve months. Factors like difficult access, material transport, and ventilation needs can also add to the project's duration.

Building up by adding square footage to the top of your home is often less expensive than adding a basement, but it depends on the specifics of your house, your property, and supply costs. Because building a basement requires excavation, it can be a more expensive option than building up.
